I'm looking into some 3/4 length wool tights (knickers?) and wondering what
my options are.

I'd like a little bit lighter weight than Kucharik, at least based on the 15
y.o. shorts I have from them :-)

Any suggestions?

Gotta say that my absolute favorite piece of gear were my woolywarm knee
warmers. They were all I needed mostly. Wore them constantly through the
winter, and they were just the right thickness to keep on underneath tights
when things got really cold (yeaaaaahh..... I know. "SF Bay Area cold").

I have not been able to find another pair of wool _knee_ warmers since they
finally wore out and failed. (Pulled 'em up higher when on a brevet and
they split horizontally at the hole I'd ignored...grrrrr).

Realize it doesn't directly help you, but if folks at RBW were looking for a
simple item to add back, that'd be my vote.
