I won't dispute Rohloff as "Lord of the Hubs", but another potential
option to eliminate the need to cold set might include:

A Sturmey-Archer 5 speed hub with no brake; model S-RF5(W) or X-RF5(W)
- low or hi flange. This hub has a 256% gear range and spacing of
119mm. Add a front derailleur, dual chainrings and a chain tensioner
(the Alfine tensioner is excellent for this) and you now have a 2x5
internal geared transmission with a nice gearing range... or keep it
simple as a 1x5 with a respectable gear range. Best part, though
(IMO) - the SA hubs also give you several shifter options, including
bar end, down tube or thumb shifter... THAT IS TOTALLY COOL...

...or do what I'm doing... go with a poor man's naked Rohloff... A
Sturmey-Archer 2-speed (kickback shifter)... no messy cables, just a
33% boost to your SS... Oh yeah, go from Single Speed to "Super
Sport".... vrooom...vroom....muscle bike... (sorry, it's past dinner
time and I'm getting silly)

Peace,
BB
