The eight mile commute would be great w/ A-bars, even with hills, but 50 mile club rides wouldn't be so fun with them. M-bars sort of split the difference, which is nice. Maybe start with those, and see which end of the bike use spectrum leaves you wanting more, then commit to one or the other (presuming you don't find the M's just right).
