Hmm, I have never heard of that rule before, why a nickel?  For flex? The
issue is I really love my campy NR crankset and pedal combo but they do
require a campy asymetrical spindle (long end is already on the crank
side) which can be hard to find. I ran this same setup on my international
with about 1mm space and never had a problem with cranks grinding into the
chainstay. I am not a masher and run a IGH setup in the back so dont have
to worry about dropping the chain.  Again, not doubting what you are saying
just wanting to have more background
