My short answer is to ship it on the ground if you are traveling in North America. On overseas trips, I've rented bikes the last few years as the cost has become prohibitive and the hassles considerable. There may still be airlines that will allow you to simply roll the bike on at a reasonable cost, but you'll need to check specific carriers, destinations & travel times. Each carrier has their own policies which can change quickly.
