I don't think of my Bombadil as a mnt. bike, more like a park bike. For the way I ride it it works great. With 200 bullmoose bars on my 52 frame the reach is good, so for me the top tube is none too long. As others have noted there are two different flavors of the Bombadil. After the Hunkapilar came out the design changed to a diagatube and the extra seat stays were added. The tire clearance was opened up quite a bit too. One part of the clearance puzzle was a new crown which I don't think had been developed when the Bombadil was first developed. I believe the steep price increase traces to the added seat stays that meet the diagatube at the seat tube. There is significant extra work there. I was talking to one of the guys there a while back and was told that Waterford refused to keep doing the stays and that joint, so they had to send the frames to Mark N to geat em completed before sending them to paint.
