Haven't read it, but it's a Sheldon referral, so likely to be good. (I plan to read it myself.) The general reason is that the chain does not disengage from the bottom of the inner chainring; thus the chain gets pulled up and (don't know the reason for *this part*) and also moves inward and jammed between ring and stay.
