The shape and curves of the GB Randonneur bar have made it the only drop
bar that I can ride with virtually no pain in my hands. I can't say that of
the Noodle or both Nitto Randonneur bars (the narrower and the wider one).
It's very comfortable both on the tops straight section, curved section and
straight section going to the hoods, which is the position I find myself
using most often. I've discovered that its narrowness on the tops also
makes it very comfortable, and have some sort of theory backed by purely
empirical evidence I've gathered by doing online research, that the wider
bars, which are presumably better to open the chest, compress the shoulder
blades and back, whereas the narrower ones don't do this on the shoulders.
Since I have no problems breathing, elbows can ge articulated and I have
many issues with shoulder and neck pain when riding, I noted right away
that after I got used to the narrowness of the bar, I wasn't having the
expected shoulder, neck or hand pain I used to always get with the drop
bars.

I also read somewhere in Jan's blog or magazine that narrower drop bars
work better with low trail forks whereas wider bars are better for higher
trail geometries. In my very early days with my Hilsen, I tried the
narrower Nitto Randonneur bar and found it uncomfortable and didn't like
how it made the Hilsenhandle, so I went back to the 48 Noodles, which I
still have on that bike. The Atlantis, where the current GB Randonneur
resides, handles very nicely with the narrow bars but it has a low trail
fork. My next step is to install the bars on the Hilsen to see how they
feel on the standard geometry, and if they not only handle equally well,
but also remove all the pain and issues that I have when riding the Hilsen
with the 48 Noodles.
