Amtrak has their own boxes, and it's easy. Typically all that is required to prepare the bike is to remove the pedals and turn the handlebar sideways, then roll it into the box and tape it up. If the station has used boxes on-hand, they're typically free, but you might have to ask specifically for used. When you get to where you're going, remove the bike from the box and reassemble. At some smaller stations, the attendant will save your box for reuse on the return leg of your trip. Make sure the Amtrak stations you're using have checked luggage service!
