I suppose I'm not resolutely against running shorter pads, but they would 
have to be quite a bit shorter as the CR720 puts the brakes tight to the 
posts.  The tires measure at 34mm so not fat by current RBW standards, but 
the frame dates from '98.  

Andrew: thank you for the tip - it's good to know of this alternative. 
 Although I'll probably just live with the situation until it starts to 
bother me.  I might try Steve's solution of actually shortening the pads 
and see how that feels under braking.
