I think it depends on a lot of things, fitness, how much you pack, 
steepness of terrain etc.  I really like having a bailout gear of around 
20" for steep dirt road climbs.  On paved roads with moderate loads it's 
more doable. I once rode hwy 1 from Eureka to SF with a low of 27" and was 
fine.
