I think it's that the thinline pads were first introduced for V brakes, and after they became popular newer brakes like the Paul Racer & Touring Canti were designed to use it rather than the smooth post "Mafac-style" traditional canti pad. But even with Mafac pads, they used the same smooth post pad on their cantilever brakes and on the Racer & Raid centerpulls, but you'll see no mention of that use on a package of Eagle Klaw smooth post pads.
