Hi Reid, I haven't tried the 9-speed, but am using Silver downtube shifters with an 8-speed cassette. I find it delightful. I am not a highly-skilled shifter, but get the shift right with no need to fine-tune most of the time. Sometimes fine-tuning is needed, but it doesn't bother me. Because some have suggested that downtube shifters on large frames might be quite a reach, I'll point out that I ride a 56cm frame.
