Stepper motors are great for things like precision controlled
movements. They are however much lower in torque and speed, and need
expensive controllers or computer control to run them. They might be
ok for small robots, or for the clever person, maybe for a turrent
control. I strongly do not recommend them for locomotion of a heavy
vehicle, basically anything over a maybe 8lbs in weight. Overall, a
stepper motor setup is usually much more expensive as a result of the
required controller, and are not for the electronics faint of heart.
