Our current practice has been to record the inaccuracy in the 245 and
give the correct spelling in a 246 field. If we decide that the citation
title should contain the corrected spelling (and I hope that will be our
decision), then in future we should probably record the correct spelling
in the 240 rather than the 246.
Having mentioned the 240 and citation titles, I'll put in a plug here
for a change I have often longed for: I think we should dispense with
the 240 and resurrect the subfield t of the 1XX field...
RDA, AGWS, cannot and should not talk about MARC. What RDA attempts to
do is to describe what questions the catalog user should be able to ask
and get a reasonable response to. Instead of saying "do a 240 for this",
or "make an added entry for xyz" RDA's concept is to say,
"the catalog user must be able to find xyz".
With regard to titles, this means RDA has got to say, "catalog
users must be able to find a title in a wording and spelling they most
likely expect". This implies that a fancy title page design that
results in an odd form when transcribed calls for an extra form that
reflects the form most likely ecpected. What MARBI makes of this is
their problem, but it should be something straightforward. Like an
extra indicator saying "This is the title that will most likely be
looked for, as opposed to the transcribed title given in 245".
Interestingly, we've long since had that in the German RAK Rules
and in the MAB format now being abandoned in favor of MARC21.
The name was "Ansetzungstitel". Can't find an easy equivalent in
English. Anybody know how "Ansetzung" might be translated in one
word? It's the process of crafting a heading, the result of which being
the "Ansetzungsform" as opposed to the "Vorlageform" (actual form).
It should help, I think, to coin a good term to convince MARBI so
they better feel the need for an appropriate slot.
