It makes sense to have an SMD which tells you what you have. What would you suggest other than "v.", or "volumes" in the case of RDA? We can no longer assume that most library resources are in print form. There are electronic texts, websites, DVDs, CD-ROMS, etc., etc., etc. In older derived records, the only ones lacking 300 were remote electronic resources. There would be confusion between print resources and electronic resources without the 300. Whether 336-338 help remains to be seen. In the mean time, we need SMDs. Also, 338 terms are sometimes too general to replace the SMD, e.g., "online resource". DVD, DVD-HD, and Blu-ray work better as SMDs than "videodisc". SMDs are too valuable to give up. __ __ J.
