When you have more "other" than any category in the list, you know something is wrong with the list. >A more specific term can be used in the Extent element. A necessity for patron information, but RDA's first option is a general term from the carrier list, as was done in the PN standard. >For something like e-books loaded onto an e-book reader, I would take >an entirely different approach. The Kobos we lend with pre-loaded >titles are cataloged as the same class of material as our watt-meters >and birding binoculars-- For which we need "equipment" as an AACR2 List 2 term, and RDA carrier term. I can see the appeal of Thomas' approach in an individual library, but in at least two public libraries of which I am aware, e-books are not permanently installed on library electronic readers for loan, but rather loaned for installation on patrons' readers, with an expiry period. They require individual records for retrieval, placing holds, and circulation. In terms of extent, original pagination for both e-books and audio books is relevant as an indication of time required to read or listen. Different libraries would have different titles on their loan electronic readers, making master records or record exchange impossible if using equipment records with contents and added entries or analytics. We prepare individual MARC records for e-publishers and e-aggregators, and have no idea which will be on which reader in an individual library, whether they will be loaned for use on a patron's reader, or accessed from the OPAC. __ __ J.
