Eric,
Ray's suggestion to check the gennie is easy - disconnect the generator's output to the inverter (probably not necessary, but helps to isolate symptoms) and start the generator manually at the gennie. If it shuts down, it's the gennie.

I guess I will try the swap and see if that does the trick.
 
On the genny, I try to stay away from genset service but I can definitely check some of the more simple items like check oil & coolant.
