A follow up question to all of this:

Does anyone know what parameters a BMS is using to determine SOC for lithium?

A project I installed uses the Orion BMS jr  for lithium batteries.  It uses a 
normal shunt, voltage and also measures internal cell resistance to determine 
SOC.
