Thanks for the information.  

There is one other question I should have asked ... because i knew it was 
coming.

While I am in the loop i want to see if someone has clicked a 'quit' 
pushbutton.  I have tried setting 
the focus on the button removing the focus from the window and the only thing 
that happens is the 
timer stops. (that is probably because the timer starts running when the window 
is opened.)  How do i 
get a program to keep an eye on the push button while running the timer 
<sheepish grin>
