I'm not sure how iChat works behind the scenes. If they're doing it, I'm guessing it is possible in RB, but I'm unfamiliar with how Apple does it.

Me neither. Apple are doing something funny, and I'm not sure exactly what their plan is. You can use the iSight with iChat, but to record video from the iSight, they want you to have QuickTime Pro, but obviously you don't need it for iChat.

There is also a bug in either system or iMovie. Without QT Pro, you can't use iMovie to capture from the iSight. However if you connect a video camera via Firewire, and then switch it off, then an option for recording from iSight becomes available under the camera switch, and it's usable. But of course if you have a video camera in the first place, you're unlikely to need the iSight. At least that's the case for a G5 iMac with iSight and 10.4.3. Haven't tried it since.

However it does show that it must be possible to use iSight video without QT Pro, as iChat obviously does, but Apple doesn't want you to without buying QT Pro, so it might be a pointer for someone.
