Thanks for the replies I have a 250 GB USB drive rather than FW. Is firewire recommended for speed or is it a necessity?

Get a big external FW drive Partition it into however many OS installs you need Install the various OS' (one per partition) In the start up disk preference panel select the partition to start from and reboot
