Now that we found out that the .plist key is required and the script
defintion files as well I want to point out that even with the .plist
key set and the script definition files available in the bundle,
Script Editor does not display the content.

I tried copying the files from Skype.app to find out if it was my
fault, but even after modifying the .script* files to fit my
application (type/creator, etc) it didn't seem to work.

There are specifications to follow. I don't recall exactly which, but you can find them on Internet.

What about the aete-resource attempt? I have no way of running ResEdit
anymore, although I know there is a tool for creating such resources.
How do I implement them into my project?

Well, there are "aete" templates made especially for ResEdit, which translate the binary resource into viewable forms. It's why I prefer using ResEdit. Else, if you have only problems with ResEdit (i.e. you can still run Classic/OS 9), you can try EightyRez (which became freeware sometimes ago). I can't find it right now, thought (I get a page not found error on the website). I can e-mail it to you, if you want, but I only have an OS 9 version (I don't know if there is a MacOS X version since the website does not work).
Else, you can figure out the format and use it in your own application.

Are there any working examples?

Of 'aete' resources that work? Well, I have plenty of them, for both OS 9 and OS X.
