Well it's not too bad. It's just set up for enterprise solutions not "mom and pop" shareware developers.
If you selling a $5,000+ solution to someone, tacking on an extra $295 or $695 is probably not a big deal. You just have to decide if you want mySQL classic ($295) or Pro ($695). To me it looks like the Partner Solution was set up for high volume customer (read "REALSoftware) who can absorb and pass on the cost to all their many users. Digging a little deeper it looks like the whole thing can be sidestepped by using ODBC in my personal case. My DB needs are very light so ODBC functionality will do me just fine. It make my customer jump through a few more hoops but that's the way it goes.
