Thank you Dean.
If you do not want to release your source code then you have to
either:
2. Buy a mySQL server license for every instance you distribute your
program, in one of two flavors (it matters not if your customer
already has
a mySQL server license):
A. $295 license if the mySQL server uses the old myISAM format
B. $695 license if the mySQL server uses the InnoDB format (Pro
license)
Now that is something I call an absolute turn off. This means: no
commercial
(not even share- or freeware) RealBasic application that uses MySQL is
to be sold under $300 per seat. What a pitty.
To me, it becomes clear that Realbasic and MySQL simply is a no go
for almost
all projects I ever did or had in mind. So much for this dream team...
If REAL won't pay the license and remove the GPL curse, I'll have to
scrap
many of my projects. You see, so many potential customers have
access to a MySQL
server (licensed = paid to MySQL AB by the ISP), and I was able to
provide them a
nice client to manage their database. But this would now mean
everyone has to
pay me at least $295 just because I used the REALbasic plugin to
connect to the database?
I cannot sell many applications for more than $300 a seat - and then
I earn $5 and
$295 goes to MySQL?
If only postgreSQL would be as easy and convenient to install and run
as MySQL...
this is bad news, indeed.
cheers
