Actually, I was referring to custom desktop software, such as a custom
messaging program like ICQ (but not ICQ) where an online "live"
community could mingle along side of the mailing list.
Personally, I like to keep my mailing list messages separate from my
personal and business messages, so I'm wondering if others would opt for
that as well, or if they like all their mail in their current mail software.
I wasn't comparing to the forums because they're horrible.

Keep your personal email separate from your mailing list. Use of
custom software would allow for high level of interactivity and live
communication, including resource sharing.
As you are certainly comparing to forums, there's no such separation there.
