I'm disappointed at how such a sweeping decision about the
'community' was not made with the knowledge or consensus of the
'community.' -- and now this community is talking about moving to
alternative lists.
To the Community: REAL has a point about consolidation; by taking the
list elsewhere I think you're diluting yourselves. I think the lists
are a great supplement to the documentation -- better than a wiki,
even. Sure, it's great to get it by email, but another great strength
is the centralized quality of it: there are mirrors and archives of
the lists, and if you're looking for info, that's a good place to
start. By starting your own lists, you're causing more redundancy
than what prompted REAL to want to drop the lists in the first place.
To REAL: Bravo on thinking about consolidation, but I think that how
your going about it is completely botched: Assuming the forums were
the way to go, you should have integrated the mailing list archives
into the forums. Then, had a *plan* for email/push technology -- not
just vague intentions of 'looking into' it after the fact -- to ease
the transition to the forums. I think the smart thing would have been
to try and make the transition seamless rather than abrupt; this is
going to cause more problems than you think it's going to solve.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. We understand
that some people prefer an email-based mailing list to an online
forum. However, we feel that consolidating our lists into the
online Forum is the best option for the community.
