It really depends what kind of data you need to store.  For some
purposes a database is ideal, for others it's overkill.

As far as the format changing, don't worry too much there has always
been a transition period when RS switched engines, during which you
could use both the new and old engine to convert to the new format.
As far as I know the only thing that killed the old RealDatabase
format is the Intel switch, it would still work on PPC or in Rosetta.
