Maybe I'm being too critical (being a university in the department of Music at U.B.C. and a professional symphonic and club musician for over 20 years) but it sure sounds to me like the singer is "singing slightly off-key a lot". Maybe that's why he normally plays the drums. (Ringo couldn't sing worth a damn either.) ;-) And no, your microphone may affect the quality of the sound but it doesn't alter the intonation of the singer. The advantage you have is of being there and, with loud enough volume (and enjoying a bit of "libation"), it can make the average sounding musicians seem like polished stars. All I can say, from my own personal experience, is that is often the case. Been there and done it. :) It does bring back memories of good times in my youth though.
