You can also combine that with file compression routines, which I believe jpeg does. With something like a psd it contains the image data plus settings specific to Photoshop, like layers and whatnot.
The same applies to multimedia codecs. Decide what information can be trimmed off, what can be compressed, and what should be preserved. This is what is known as "the tricky bit".
