my experiance is that the server does not crash but that the encoder does. 
There are ip monitoring software on the market that will set off a pager if the
ip is unreachable and or a program does not respond.  We use free bsd on a dual
pII 266 with dpt cacheing controler with 64 meg. This server has not crashed in
the two years of operation. Infact if we had not moved it the other day it had
been up for 350 days straight.
