Subject: RE: local playback of RM & SMI files

Hi,

I posted a message a few weeks ago also asking about local playback =
problems. I gulp when I see mention of playback only on high-end systems. =
I am exploring distributing SMIL presentations on CD-ROM to developing =
countries that may only have Pentium 133 Mhz and 16 MB RAM (and no =
Internet access). What is the reason for the problems on local playback? =
If I compress all the media as much as possible will this help? Please =
offer suggestions!!

I've had similar problems, although in my case the RM files play on some
machines and not on others. For PCs, playback is fine on a dual-processor
PIII 500 with 512Mb RAM and NT 4.0, but not on a single PII 300 with 128 =
Mb
RAM and NT 4.0. For Macs, the RM files play on a Powerbook G3 300 with 128
Mb RAM but not on a PowerMac 6500/300 with 128Mb RAM.

In fact, I'd largely forgotten the problem as I've got into the habit of
only playing back on the computers where local playback works!
