Subject: Re: local playback of RM & SMI files
Hi Theresa,
My experience with the RealNetworks CODECs is that they are better suited
for streaming over networks at relatively low bandwidths (under 300 kbps).
With the Real CODECs, as bandwidth goes up so does the processor overhead on
the decode side. This is the case even on files that are being played
locally (off of a CD-ROM for instance). Since your baseline/target machine
is a Pentium 133 with 16 MB of RAM you have a strict set of limitations. If
you are going to deliver RM and SMIL presentations should try keeping total
bandwidth below 128 kbps. This is just an estimate. You should test any
presentation that you create on a machine with the same specs as your
baseline/target. You should also make sure that your baseline machine meets
the minimum requirements for running RealPlayer G2 or whatever version
you're developing for (I'm assuming G2 since you're using SMIL).
