What might be nice is to locate code that creates a kind of level
of detail (LOD) in terms of bounding rectangular boxes -- something
that for larger meshes, might define a small set of bounding volumes
for purposes of collision detection. Such an approach might also
work well for simpler meshes.

The default approach of using a prim's geometric extents for the
prim used to instantiate the mesh is inadequate. And, as you say,
using the actual mesh as the collision volume is also inadequate.
Something in between perhaps....?
