My 5 cents about this topic: SL is a fenced Island and opensimulator (SL based worlds) will just succeed if they will bring features to the users and content creators that are not matched by Secondlife.
Imho the concept of creating an Apache like 3d Web would benefit the above mentioned groups far more. If the focus is set to a better user experience, manageability, ease of use for newcomers and content creators, then on legacy compatibility, users will be willing easily to adapt, if they get more compelling content and features. Except for the nice GUI design of the SL 2.0 viewer, the full functional web support and some nice features adapted from Emerald its still the old concept of a walled garden under the hood. What sense makes a new king in old clothes anyhow?
