According to the ABC news this evening, Refshauge has admitted that the Caroline Lane needle exchange did not breach the rules. The exchange, according to the minister, was not operating properly in that boxes of needles were left unattended and no counselling was available. Caroline Lane will not be re-opened but a mobile service for Redfern will be put in its place. The mobile service will have counselling also but the exchange will only be for residents and not for people from elsewhere (!). The government will meet with residents and consult with them on opening a new, local facility to take the place of the impending mobile service. Whether or not this outcome is desirable, I don't know. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the area can fill us in on whether or not this new proposal will be adequate or not. In any case, I think Recoznetters, once again, helped to light a fire under a pollie so that the injustice was not swept under the carpet. We will monitor the minister to make sure that he follows up his words with something concrete.
