Olsen refutes 'ethnic
 cleansing' as understatement
 Sunday 18 April, 1999 (5:27pm AEST)

South Australian Premier John Olsen has called for an
end to the use of the term "ethnic cleansing".

Mr Olsen made the call during a ceremony
 commemorating multiculturalism and the contribution
 of South Australia's vietnamese community.

Mr Olsen says the events in Kosovo should serve as a
reminder that the cold-blooded murder of innocent
people on the basis of their cultural heritage is a
despicable act of genocide, and should not be
 understated.

"This term has been coined by the media and has now
become an accepted part of a description of attrocities
which are occurring overseas," he said.

"We ought to drop that term permanently.

"The description serves to greatly diminish the shocking
tragedy and murder, violence and social dislocation
which is being imposed on innocent civilian families."
