Olsen refutes 'ethnic cleansing' as understatement Sunday 18 April, 1999 (5:27pm AEST) South Australian Premier John Olsen has called for an end to the use of the term "ethnic cleansing". Mr Olsen made the call during a ceremony commemorating multiculturalism and the contribution of South Australia's vietnamese community. Mr Olsen says the events in Kosovo should serve as a reminder that the cold-blooded murder of innocent people on the basis of their cultural heritage is a despicable act of genocide, and should not be understated. "This term has been coined by the media and has now become an accepted part of a description of attrocities which are occurring overseas," he said. "We ought to drop that term permanently. "The description serves to greatly diminish the shocking tragedy and murder, violence and social dislocation which is being imposed on innocent civilian families." ------------------------------------------------------- RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
