The Canberra Times Friday, 25 August, 2000 Letters Some seem afraid of the truth MR PETER HOWSON, who attacked the credibility of Aboriginal people and Sir Ronald Wilson (CT, 22 August, p.5), would have been Minister for Aboriginal Affairs when Frank Moy was the Deputy Director of the then Office of Aboriginal Affairs from 1968-69 into the 1970s. Moy wrote in the 1950s about the policy of the Northern Territory Native Affairs to remove the children from their native mothers as soon after birth as was reasonably possible. The Cubillo and Gunner case has brought out some interesting reactions from the Prime Minister, Mr Howson and others. Justice O'Loughlin asks and answers himself in his judgement: "Why would the mothers and children flee when a patrol officer appears?'' He then answered, ". . . clearly, such takings had occurred with sufficient frequency that the urge to flee was uppermost.'' It has also brought support from many Australians. As the ACT representative for the Churches of Christ on the Federal Aborigines' Board, I know that they put in a written submission to the Stolen Generation report and that Sir Ronald spent many hours with the board's director and missionaries. In fact, he had to get a tram to the home of one of the missionaries as they couldn't go to him. On other occasions Sir Ronald got taxis to people who were sick or unable to see him otherwise. There isn't an Aboriginal family in this country that hasn't been affected by the "stolen children". If the Stolen Generation report is creating a "poisonous perception" about Australia internationally maybe it is because we have some people who are afraid of recognising the truth of their history, like Mr Howson.
