The Sri Lanka Daily News Thursday 24, August 2000 Canada needs to improve its human rights record VANCOUVER, Canada, Wednesday (AFP) -Canada still has a lot of work to do in the area of human rights, especially among its aboriginal people, before it can be considered a world leader in the field, a former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations said Tuesday. Stephen Lewis, speaking at an annual international human rights conference here, said Canada has made a lot of progress in the field of human rights, but added that critics would have an easy time finding cracks in the system. "There I was a representative of Canada being asked to chastise other countries about human rights and they would reply by reading from newspaper articles and reports about the high mortality of aboriginal infants, the poverty among the native people and our reservation system," Lewis said. Lewis, who spent the past four years as deputy executive director of United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) in New York, said Canada was at times exposed as being "hypocritical." About 400 delegates from eight countries have converged on Vancouver for the 52nd annual International Association of Official Human Right Agencies (IAOHRA) conference, which wraps up Thursday. -- ********************************** 'Click' to protect the rainforest: Make the Rainforest Site your homepage! http://www.therainforestsite.com/ ********************************** ------------------------------------------------------ RecOzNet2 has a page @ http://www.green.net.au/recoznet2 and is archived at http://www.mail-archive.com/ To unsubscribe from this list, mail [EMAIL PROTECTED], and in the body of the message, include the words: unsubscribe announce or click here mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20announce This posting is provided to the individual members of this group without permission from the copyright owner for purposes of criticism, comment, scholarship and research under the "fair use" provisions of the Federal copyright laws and it may not be distributed further without permission of the copyright owner, except for "fair use."
