ABC News Fri, 25 Aug 2000 13:24 AEST Plastic bags found in whale's stomach Researchers have found a number of plastic bags in the stomach of a Bryde's whale which died while beached on a mudflat near Cairns yesterday. It is not yet known if the bags contributed to the eight-metre whale's death. Clean Up Australia director Ian Kiernan says ocean pollution is a major killer of marine life worldwide, but this event was particularly distressing. "What this sad event represents to me is that your assets up there, the Great Barrier Reef and such, are under threat from bad behaviour," he said. "If you don't look after assets, they turn into liabilites and it's up to everybody to make sure that they make a difference and improve our day to day behaviour for good business reasons." 1999 Australian Broadcasting Corporation Every time I see a gathering with massed helium balloons I cringe because most of them end up in the water somewhere and either injure or kill, bird or marine life. Premier Carr is bringing in legislation to ban this practice - about 20 years behind North America - and it is long overdue. I would urge anyone on the list if they are involved in organising gatherings to use the release of doves for symbolism rather than balloons. We must care for all life.
