There are two things to remember.
1. codecs
2. protocols

Protocols send content to the Flash Player.  The Flash Player knows how to
read certain codecs.  Existing codecs will continue to work.  New codecs may
have to be licensed, but this is nothing new as On2 currently requires a
license.

The other cool thing is that if another type of Player ever becomes
prevalent, Red5 is versatile and can be developed to support n... number of
protocols and thus can be used for multiple platforms.

Red5 is Java and can run on multiple platforms

Red5 can deliver Ajax application, JEE applications, and the list goes on
and on.  Wow, I've been doing way too much praise the past few days.
