Allardyce claimed on Sept 25, six days after the programme was aired, that he had instructed his lawyers to prepare a case against the BBC. "I've had lengthy discussions with my lawyers and they've advised me I have a very strong case," he claimed at the time. However, more than nine weeks on, and despite Bolton chairman Phil Gartside's vote of confidence in Allardyce, a spokesman for Panorama confirmed that they still had not received a writ. Allardyce is unlikely to sue the BBC until he has seen the final outcome of the Lord Stevens inquiry, due to be discussed at a meeting of the Premier League board in the next two weeks. On top of that Bolton are carrying out their own investigation into the Panorama allegations, the findings of which will not be released until after Stevens has filed his final report. Pre-empting those two investigations would clearly be risky for Allardyce, a fact confirmed by his spokesman, Max Clifford. "What Sam needs to do is wait and see what comes out of all this before he decides what he's going to do legally," he said. All of which makes Gar'tside's decision to speak publicly in support of Allardyce this week puzzling.' http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2051413-10356806 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10367483 City breaks from £99 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [19] Fergie story --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: by Roddy Forsyth in Telegraph 'The recent tributes to Sir Alex Ferguson's 20 years as Manchester United manager evoked memories of the oddities of a football correspondent's life. While he was Aberdeen boss we were once sitting in his office at Pittodrie, chatting over bowls of soup, when his phone rang. After a few seconds Fergie jumped up and said: "I'm really sorry. I've got to go - there's a man going round Aberdeen saying he's Alex Ferguson and he's just tried to buy £3,000 worth of carpets...." An equally bizarre situation interrupted a chat with Davie Hay when he was Celtic manager. As with Fergie, the phone rang, Hay's features became anxious and he leapt to his feet. "That was my wife," he said. "I'll need to go home right now. A bird's got into the house and the missus is terrified." Football being football - and although I had never picked up any hint that Hay was a womaniser - I immediately assumed that the intruder was some besotted female. On enquiring about the incident next time we met, I was ashamed to be informed by Hay that the culprit had been a misdirected starling.' --------------------------------- [18] from yesterdays Liverpool Daily Post --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: 'NORTHWICH Victoria are hoping for a near capacity 5,000 crowd tonight for the visit of manager Sir Alex Ferguson and a Manchester United XI to perform the official ground opening ceremony at the Victoria Stadium (kick-off 7.45 pm). More than 3,000 tickets had been sold including all stand seats up to last weekend and spectators will be able to pay at the gate at £12 (adults), £10 (concessions) and £6 (under-16s). The United team will contain a sprinkling of internationals probably including Alan Smith and Kieron Richardson, despite last night's Premiership game against Everton at Old Trafford. Vies manager Steve Burr said: "It's the culmination of three years' hard work by chairman Mike Connett who has poured a fortune into the development of the stadium which is now very impressive. Tonight is really for him, but it will also give my team a fillip to be playing against such opposition." The match marks the completion of the first phase of the development at Wincham which includes bars and restaurants and has reportedly already cost Connett in the region of pounds 4million. An office complex, marina and two all-weather pitches are yet to be added in a second phase starting next summer given planning permission. To mark the occasion, Sir Alex, accompanied by United director Sir Bobby Charlton, will unveil a plaque before the kick-off when there will be a firework display to provide a carnival backdrop.' --------------------------------- [17] from Daily Mail --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: 'United's abysmal display in a 4-1 Riverside defeat last season was their lowest point, leading to skipper Roy Keane's fierce, censored attack on the team on MUTV and his own subsequent exit to join Celtic. A quirk of the fixture list means United can open up a nine-point lead before Chelsea play again, but the tricky trip to Boro is followed by the Old Trafford derby with Manchester City a week on Saturday. City forced a 1-1 draw last season, and the decisive Champions League visit on Wednesday night of Benfica, who knocked United out of Europe 12 months ago, will also focus players' minds this week. Gary Neville, recalling Everton's point at Old Trafford last season, said: 'We are in a run of fixtures just now which saw us slip up badly last year. These games are crucial to us. 'This stage last season we dropped points, we can't afford to again. We've started in a decent way, now we must go to Middlesbrough with the right determination and attitude, and hopefully get another victory.' --------------------------------- [16] Ronaldo fitness worries? --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: from Guardian 'One concern is the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been substituted in four of his last six games - five for United and one for Portugal - because of an ankle injury he suffered against Blackburn on November 11. He was withdrawn against Everton with 22 minutes left and Ferguson confirmed that the winger would need treatment. The United manager did, however, say the early diagnosis was that "he would be OK for Saturday". http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2051413-5042808 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10387791 Hotels in Manchester Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [15] Guardian on Fergie comments --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: 'Didier Drogba found himself at the centre of the Premiership's latest elbowing controversy last night when Sir Alex Ferguson criticised the Chelsea striker for an aerial challenge that left Nemanja Vidic fearing he had a fractured jaw. Vidic missed Manchester United's 3-0 defeat of Everton on Wednesday and an angry Ferguson revealed that the Serbian defender had needed an x-ray to see whether there had been any lasting damage inflicted by Drogba's flailing elbow. The incident occurred in the first half of Chelsea's 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday and, having studied the video replays, Ferguson made it clear he was unhappy with the referee Howard Webb's decision not to show the Premiership's leading scorer a red card. "The concern for us was that the player got only a yellow card for use of the elbow, when it could have caused a serious injury," said Ferguson. "Vidic got an elbow into his jaw and that's a concern. It could have been a serious one." As a player Ferguson was infamous for the occasionally reckless way he led with his elbows but, as a manager, he has frequently spoken out about the dangers, once predicting that someone could be blinded. Lke Jose Mourinho, he was generally impressed with Webb and his anger lies primarily with Drogba, with replays indicating that the striker had looked to see where Vidic was before bringing down his right arm into his opponent's jaw. Vidic returned to light training yesterday and Ferguson said the former Spartak Moscow player had had a lucky escape. "We thought it was fractured and we sent him for a scan. Fortunately it is not but he is still very, very tender, so we had to leave him out [against Everton]." Ferguson was unwilling to name names, understandably reluctant to engage United's main challengers in a war of words, but he is known to be unhappy with the manner in which some Chelsea players led with their arms as they went into challenges. Ferguson was also unimpressed about the number of fouls that Chelsea conceded, believing it to be a deliberate ploy to break up the pattern of the game and prevent his team from getting into their usual flow. This, he said, had been something he expected and that he had warned his players about. Vidic is likely to return for tomorrow's game against Middlesbrough at the Riverside, where a win would extend United's lead at the top of the Premiership to six points - Chelsea have a free weekend - although Ferguson must weigh up whether to play his strongest side or to hold back players for Wednesday's Champions League tie at home to Benfica. --------------------------------- [14] Times picks up on Fergie comments we had yesterday --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: It was only ever going to be a matter of time before Chelsea and Manchester Uniteds mental sparring turned antagonistic, but if there was a surprise yesterday, it was that it was Sir Alex Ferguson, and not José Mourinho, pointing an accusatory finger. In a thinly veiled attack that is certain to anger the Chelsea manager, Ferguson implied that Didier Drogba should have been sent off for an elbow on Nemanja Vidic, the United defender, during the teams 1-1 draw in the Barclays Premiership at Old Trafford last Sunday. Vidic had to sit out Uniteds 3-0 victory at home to Everton on Wednesday after undergoing an X-ray on his jaw, which bore the brunt of Drogbas elbow. The Chelsea striker was booked for the first-half challenge, but, having initially feared that Vidic had broken his jaw, Ferguson believes that the yellow card Howard Webb brandished was not punishment enough. He [Vidic] got an elbow into his jaw and it was a concern because we thought maybe it was fractured, the United manager said. Fortunately it is not, but he is still very, very tender so we just had to leave him out [against Everton]. What was a concern was that the player [Drogba] only got a yellow card for the use of the elbow. With the title race now looking like a straight fight between United and Chelsea, the two clubs have appeared only too happy to raise the stakes over the past week. Peter Kenyon, the Chelsea chief executive, was the first to twist the knife by claiming that the Premiership champions will be the biggest club in the world come 2014, while Mourinhos insistence that his team will be back on top soon after their 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday is certain to have irked United. Few, however, are as good at ruffling feathers as Ferguson and his accusatory comments about Drogba are the clearest indication yet that, for all the mutual respect that exists between the United manager and Mourinho, the niceties are over. There would be no better way for United to get under Chelseas skin than by extending their three-point lead. By the time Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday week, Chelsea could trail the leaders by nine points if United win their next two league games, away to Middlesbrough tomorrow evening and at home to Manchester City next Saturday. These fixtures sandwich Benficas visit to Old Trafford, a game which will determine whether United are still in the Champions League after Christmas. This makes six points no easy feat, as Gary Neville conceded yesterday. United were humbled 4-1 at the Riverside last season, drew 1-1 with City at Old Trafford, and lost to Benfica in Lisbon to exit the Champions League at the group stage, and Neville believes the team can ill-afford such slip-ups this season, even if Wednesdays result was a good omen. Weve got a difficult period of games now which are crucial for us, the United captain said. We talked about the importance of this period before Wednesdays game. They are all big games, but the Benfica and City games are huge and we simply had to beat Everton after the disappointment of drawing with Chelsea. This stage last season was when we dropped some points but we are not going to do that this season. We cant afford to. Numbers game 4 The number of goals that Manchester United conceded against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in the Barclays Premiership last season. 9 The number of points Chelsea will trail United by come the Premiership champions game at home to Arsenal on Sunday week if United win their next two league games. £15m The cost of Uniteds exit at the hands of Benfica from the group stage of the Champions League last season. --------------------------------- [13] BBC with head to heads --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: Home and away League: Middlesbro 29 wins, Man United 47, Draws 20 Prem: Middlesbro 5 wins, Man United 12, Draws 5 at Middlesbrough only League: Middlesbro 18 wins, Man United 19, Draws 11 Prem: Middlesbro 2 wins, Man United 7, Draws 2 --------------------------------- [12] BBC with notable stats --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: 'Louis SAHA is United's leading scorer with nine League and Cup goals. Wayne ROONEY is the club's top marksman in the Premiership with seven. ROONEY is one shy of 50 career Premiership goals. If he lines up for the kick-off, ROONEY will be making his 100th start in a United shirt. SAHA needs to score one more to bring his total for English clubs to 100. The Manchester United manager officially opened the Conference club's Victoria Stadium by unveiling a plaque. Ferguson also took a young side to the venue for a friendly. Ambitious Northwich owner Mike Connett has built restaurants, bars and lounges on the complex. He is now planning to build a 60-bedroom hotel and a marina in the next stage of the development. Ferguson said: "I consider this to be the beginning of a new era for the club. "Mike has had the foresight to realise that clubs cannot survive on football alone and need restaurants, bars and executive suites to support it." http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2051413-10351781 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2051413-10295995 Have a Free £25 bet on totesport Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [9] Phil Nev remembers Fergie --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: "All I can remember about the manager was total fear when he came into the dressing room. The French side were cruising to a 3-0 victory over their Dutch counterparts, before the referee Espen Berntsen was forced to take the players off the pitch with ten minutes left. Feyenoord fans were at the centre of the trouble as they hurled seats at home fans and tried to break through cordons to launch further attacks, which forced police to use tear gas which drifted onto the pitch - and forced the players off the pitch. At this point Nancy fans were told to depart the stadium. Many presumed the game was being abandoned, but instead the players were brought back on to play out the remaining ten minutes of the match...' --------------------------------- [6] FA finally act over Spurs-Chelsea game, sort of. Oh and Ashley Cole, Lampard and Chelsea basically lied about Poll then? --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: below from FA but worth nothing this bit which suggests Cashley Cole's column was one plain, well, lie? 'Graham Poll has also been cleared by The FA of saying anything inappropriate towards Chelsea players during the same match regarding their discipline. Responses sought from Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Chelsea FC and the match officials confirm that Poll did not say that Chelsea needed "to be taught a lesson". There will no action against any parties on this matter.' 'John Terry has been charged with improper conduct regarding comments made about referee Graham Poll following Chelsea's match at Tottenham Hotspur on 5 November. John Terry claimed in an interview with Chelsea TV, which was subsequently widely reported, that Graham Poll had given him conflicting reasons for his second yellow card, saying: "On the pitch Graham Poll said to me that it was for the barge on Ghaly where I just kept running. Then after the game he then said to me it was for the fall when me and Ledley King fell so, you know, hes obviously had a look at it, or got people to look at it and decided thats probably the best option for him and it covers every angle for him." This claim is denied by Graham Poll. The charge has been brought on the basis that John Terry's comments question Graham Polls integrity and therefore constitute improper conduct. He has until 15 December to respond to the charge. Graham Poll has also been cleared by The FA of saying anything inappropriate towards Chelsea players during the same match regarding their discipline. Responses sought from Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Chelsea FC and the match officials confirm that Poll did not say that Chelsea needed "to be taught a lesson". There will no action against any parties on this matter. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been reminded of his responsibilities for media comments related to Poll's performance in the same match and asked to use the relevant official channels to give feedback on the performance of referees. He will not face any formal disciplinary action.' --------------------------------- [5] Xmas Shopping with or via us, all help us! --------------------------------- Posted Friday, December 1, 2006 by ed: SHOPPING AT RED NEWS, AMAZON, HMV, M&S, JESSOPS, ARGOS AND DIXONS THIS XMAS? I think they are on the verge of achieving something great at this club and you don't want to miss these things. When we got back into the dressing room, we managed to watch the last few minutes of Chelsea's game at Bolton. That kind of thing will always happen. The important thing is we are in a position to worry about them." --------------------------------- [45] Telegraph match report --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, November 30, 2006 by ed: St Andrew's Day dawned with sport's most famous Scot in his preferred position, staring down at his opponents from football's summit. If Sir Alex Ferguson is to remain there, then Manchester United need to overcome the game's middle-classes - Everton, Middlesbrough and Blackburn - teams who have inflicted serious wounds during the last three seasons. Despite the quality of the finishing from Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrice Evra, this was not an inspired victory on a night that apart from Wayne Rooney's performance, lacked something. Rooney answered the taunts of the Everton supporters by flaunting his badge and stretching every sinew to force a breakthrough. It was his shot, turned back into the area by Evra, that John O'Shea clipped neatly home just before the end to put a gloss on the evening. Rooney will reappear at Old Trafford today to sign copies of the autobiography that has prompted David Moyes to sue for libel, although this result will have caused the Everton manager as much hurt as Rooney's ghosted words. His team's work-rate deserved better than a three-goal defeat, although with the out-of-sorts James Beattie leading his attack in place of the injured Andy Johnson, there was no edge to Everton's efforts. advertisement ''The first goal was the biggest moment in the match because we were not playing particularly well," said Gary Neville, who captained United against his brother, Phil. "At 1-0 I still felt comfortable because I felt confident we would keep a clean sheet. We have got a good defensive shield in front of us. But we had to win because we have a series of four difficult games ahead of us and the ones against Manchester City and Benfica are absolutely huge. It was at this stage where we dropped points last season." Ferguson had made five alterations to the side that had drawn the over-hyped "title decider" with Chelsea on Sunday. It left much depending on an inexperienced midfield, each member of whom had something to prove, but aside from a free-kick from Kieran Richardson that skimmed the crossbar, nothing much happened to threaten Paul Scholes or Ryan Giggs. Scholes was on the bench but Giggs, upon whose shoulders so much of United's revival has rested, stared down at proceedings from the directors' box on his 33rd birthday. Rumours had been swirling around Manchester that there had been a bust-up with Ferguson, who held him responsible for Ricardo Carvalho's equaliser on Sunday. This was categorically denied by United who pointed out that Giggs had a tight calf muscle and was being rested ready for games against Middlesbrough and Benfica, two clubs who between them had thoroughly wrecked United's last campaign. Every side that has ever won a championship has required a degree of fortune and six minutes from the interval United received theirs. The finish from Ronaldo, employed as a supporting foil to Rooney, was admittedly immaculate. He buried his shot into the corner of Richard Wright's net but the ball had only fallen to his feet via a ricochet when Michael Carrick's shot was blocked. Despite Neville's confidence, the match was tight enough for United to require a second goal to soothe their supporters. It arrived when Rooney slipped the ball through to Evra, whose shot, driven between Wright's legs, was his first goal in almost two years and possessed that indefinable touch of class largely absent elsewhere.' This is a book that one visits. To start with, it would be no straightforward task for the postal services to deliver a review copy: at 1.5 square metres and 30kg (over 4½ stone), United presents a considerable challenge to any courier, and a threat to any letterbox. Furthermore, at £3,000, this is not the kind of book this reviewer would like to spill his coffee on. So I visited the offices of Kraken, the publishers, where the editor, wearing white cotton gloves, manhandled the massive leather-bound volume from its protective case and commenced to turn the pitch-sized pages. Two hours later, he was still turning. There are 850 pages, and the only ones we skipped were the stats at the back. Phew. My initial reaction was that of a rabbit caught in the headlights of an oncoming Rolls-Royce, too bewitched by the scale and splendour of the object to engage the critical faculties. But then reality clicked in. The Kraken people call it an "opus", but it's a book, damn it, just a jolly large, jolly expensive book. It contains words and pictures, and these are very fine. The publisher, Karl Fowler, is a former managing director of the Goldman Sachs bank, and therefore knows what he wants and how to obtain it. The instructions to his editors were clear: "I don't want a Manchester United book. I want the Manchester United book." advertisement The writers are the best to be found for the topic. Hugh McIlvanney kicks off with a monumental essay entitled Heart and Soul. James Lawton then takes over, before passing to our own Jim White. Patrick Barclay is on the team along with Jonathan Northcroft. You can't fault their pedigree and they seem to have been pointed in the right directions. They have each, effectively, written an interesting book about an aspect of Manchester United, which has then been subsumed into the greater whole. The photographers and picture researchers have been hard at work as well, with stunning results. The commissioned work is truly outstanding, in particular Chris Steele-Perkins' reportage of a day at Old Trafford, and an amazing two-metre-wide gatefold of Cristiano Ronaldo's ball skills by the Los Angeles motion-capturing magician Patrik Giardino. Eric Cantona art-directed his own self-portraits, with predictably bizarre results (blood, feathers, etc, etc). The design and graphics are superb, the reproduction pin-sharp. Everything about the book is top-notch, tickety-boo or, in football parlance, different class. Is it worth £3,000? That is not a question I am qualified to answer, since I cannot recall the last time I had £3,000 to spend on anything, let alone a book. But if you happen to be wealthy and have lots of friends who are United fans, it is fair to say that your Christmas present problems are over. Mr Fowler is a bright and determined man, and will have done his homework. Manchester United is an international brand, currently under American ownership, but with truly worldwide appeal. The audience of potential purchasers is not thus restricted to British fat cats but to high net worth individuals the world over. A sister volume on the Super Bowl will have limited appeal outside the United States, but there are surely enough American millionaire gridiron fans for that to show a profit. One of the most appealing aspects of United is the wholehearted involvement of current and past players. Future projects have been agreed with Celtic, the Wimbledon tennis tournament and Arsenal. Ferrari have been mooted; the Vatican are said to be keen. So we could be on the verge of a new era in top-end book publishing. It is not a revolution that will affect many of us as we scuttle around with our three-for-twos at Waterstone's, but companies specialising in library furniture for the well-heeled can expect a bonanza. United, the forerunner of a new trend, requires more than a humble coffee table to rest upon. A marble plinth seems more in order. It is traditional, when reviewing hefty works, to caution the reader against the danger of dropping the work on their feet. The hazard here is more that you might put your back out trying to lift it in the first place. So get the butler to do it for you.' --------------------------------- [43] Jol says Defoe going nowhere --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, November 30, 2006 by ed: "Jermain is going nowhere. I'm not going to sell someone who is playing such a crucial part to our challenge in the Carling Cup, UEFA Cup and Premiership. There is always speculation about Jermain. The transfer window will come up again in a month's time and he has already been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Portsmouth. Jermain is very important to us. There is all this talk about him not playing regularly and yet he has started six of the last nine games" --------------------------------- [42] More Mourinho --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, November 30, 2006 by ed: "It was a good period for us to come here and (to) Manchester and go home with the same distance (three points). It's very positive. We are not top of the league. We want to be there all the time but we had two very difficult matches. If you do it wrong, you can leave Old Trafford with six points (deficit) and Bolton maybe nine points. I don't think we will take a lot of time to be top of the league. If you tell me when we play at home, it is three points (difference), I would not be very sad because it would be all in our hands. Now is our time to turn things round. I like to be first but I am very happy with this situation." --------------------------------- [41] Book signing tonight --------------------------------- Posted Thursday, November 30, 2006 by ed: Former United and Republic of Ireland striker Frank Stapleton will be signing copies of 'We're the Famous Man United' with Andy Mitten, the book's author, at WHSmith in the Trafford Centre this Thursday night between 7-8pm. Now out, and highly recommended, Andy Mitten interviews 11 famous United players for their story Here's what those who've reviewed 'We're The Famous Man United' have said about it so far... "Some of the very best interviews with former United players that I've ever read. Andy Mitten has a remarkable ability to get people to open up and reveal all. Full of great anecdotes, detail and colour, bringing back just what it was like following United in the pre-Ferguson era." Michael Crick. "A terrific antidote to the banal sporting autobiography. Next time someone asks 'Where have the gameís characters gone?' here's an answer: They're between the covers of We're the Famous Man United. Candid, full of illuminating anecdotes and with an appeal well beyond those old enough to remember the 70s and 80s and far beyond the borders of United fandom." Ian Hawkey, The Sunday Times. "Anyone who wants to read about nice, clean-cut footballers listening to Luther Vandross and going to bed at 9.30pm should look away now. Andy Mitten has compiled the warts-and-all, blow-by-blow forensic examination of what really went on at Englandís biggest club in the 1980s. Utterly compelling." Daniel Taylor, The Guardian. "Twenty years on from their heyday, the players of the eighties have nothing to hide. And even if they had, Andy Mitten would find it out. By turns jaw-dropping, enraging, staggering and alarming, but always, always charged with affection and enthusiasm, this book is what nostalgia is all about." Jim White, The Daily Telegraph. "First came the Busby Babes and now the modern United is 'all grown up'. This hugely entertaining book proves that during the intervening 'teenage years' the lads had themselves a bit of fun." Graham Hunter, Sky. "This book will define United work in this era like Jim White's book did a decade ago. We knew many of these players as United heroes, but the fans knew little about the real men inside the Red shirts they wore. Andy Mitten takes characters we cheered on the terraces and allows us to see them in a new light; away from the limelight. Tinged with humour, reflection and at times sadness, these were the players who missed the golden wages on offer in today's football by a decade yet played in an era that many fans fondly recall as they watched gifted footballers giving their all. Away from the hyperbole surrounding today's stars, these were real characters, real men, and here we see their real stories - be it uplifting or eye opening. Life's ups and downs; before, during and after their United careers. Mitten's honest approach and incisive interviewing technique allows us a revealing and at times startling account of what it was like to play for Manchester United and the life thereafter. Highly recommended to young and old football fan alike, it will give a new perspective on household names. Ideal for those who lived the 1980s generation, and those who wish they had."
