"Manchester United are probably playing the best football they can play at the
moment. They've had very few injuries so far. Whereas we know as a team we've
got another level to go to. We need to take the game to teams and then no-one
can live with us. We must go on a run of games and keep winning. We must keep
the pressure up. Christmas is a difficult period. United have got tough games.
We must just keep winning and keep on like we know we're capable of."

“It is definitely a realistic target to reach that figure. Maybe he will have
to tailor his game and play infield sometimes because for the last 15 years he
has been up and down that touchline, which is incredible. I don't think anyone
else is capable of doing that for so long in the Premier League. I have seen a
lot of wide players come and go during that time but he is still there."

'Former France and Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez is to sign a
six-month deal with struggling Nantes on Thursday, his lawyer said.
Barthez, who retired in July after France lost the World Cup final to Italy,
could make his return at Toulouse on December 23.
"He has not signed anything yet but it is being processed," Barthez's lawyer
told reporters on Wednesday.
Nantes are second from bottom of Ligue 1 with 13 points from 17 matches, two
points from the safety zone.
Barthez, 35, started at Toulouse before joining Olympique Marseille and lifting
the Champions League trophy in 1993.
He then moved to Monaco and Manchester United before returning to Marseille.
Barthez won 87 caps for France, helping Les Bleus win the 1998 World Cup and
the European championship two years later.'

[6] Indy story on Madrid allegations
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, December 14, 2006 by cover4db:
'Real Madrid have begun legal action against the French newspaper Le Monde
following an article published last week alleging that the club had links to
the controversial Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

Fuentes, who is being investigated in a judicial inquiry into doping in sport,
particularly cycling, did not name the clubs he has worked with in an interview
with Le Monde.

Real published a copy of a letter sent to Le Monde on their website. It read:
"The article is false, for Real Madrid have never been linked to doctor
Eufemiano Fuentes. It is also false that our club has ever requested the
services of this doctor. No unauthorised product or substance has ever been
used within our club.

"Equally false is the notion that any of our players ever scheduled
appointments with said doctor. Thus, all reports and data published are
emphatically false.

"Taking into account the falsehood of the information published by your
journal, we invite and demand [you] to rectify all these false reports and that
this rectification and subsequent apology be published in the same manner and
layout format as the above mentioned original article with its false
allegations.

"In any event, we wish to inform you that Real Madrid (notwithstanding the
legal actions that other incriminated parties may incur) will file the
appropriate lawsuit against your newspaper and the person or persons directly
or indirectly responsible for the fabrication and publication of said false and
untrue reports."

"I am entirely recovered from the injury. Since last week I've been in
training, so I don't think there is going to be any problem. The two ligaments
in my ankle were broken. I had surgery to connect them - and then I had three
months of rehab. As a football player, watching games is not very pleasant. My
team is top of the league, so I'm very glad about that. But I still want to
play. I'm very impressed with the team's performances - but I'd like to join in
and show my own ability. I'd like to contribute to the team."

“I spoke to Alex and said West Ham are third from bottom. He said 20 years ago,
Man United were in the same position when he took over. And he told me, ‘What
you’ve got is an opportunity to go into a club and be successful’. What I
talked to Alex about was the difficulty of going to a club mid stream. There
were a few vacancies in the summer where people had the opportunity to prepare
pre-season and bring in their own players, etc. I was just seeking Alex’s
advice on a couple of things — in fact, he was writing out his Christmas cards
when I phoned and he wanted to get back to them. I just wanted to have a
soundbite from him because the League Managers’ Association, where I am on the
committee, can sometimes be classed as the old fogies. But all we’re trying to
do is help the managers lot in difficult times. Alan Pardew has perhaps found
that this week. All I was talking to Alex about was my future and he’s got
great affection for West Ham. Sir Alex didn’t hesitate to remind me about my
record against his club but there’s a first time for everything. West Ham have
upset Manchester United before and maybe they can do it again, even though Sir
Alex’s team are playing exceptionally well."

He has been an outstanding performer, a good old-fashioned defender who loves
to head the ball and loves to tackle. He is infectious in the way he makes
everybody around him want to defend in the same manner. It is great to have
defenders like that who never take a backward step. Rio is very important to
our back four and, for me, still the single most important member. He offers
that calmness and experience and positional sense. Nothing fazes him. He has
an excellent partnership with Nemanja and we are blessed to have them because
they complement each other so well. Last season, the manager said he wanted to
create a solid foundation at the back. We are seeing more of that and we look
like we are enjoying defending again."

Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 by cover4db:
'Manchester United have joined the hunt for Sevilla starlet Antonio Puerta
after his contract talks stalled.

The 22-year-old is contracted to the Uefa Cup winners until 2008 and Sevilla
had been looking to tie him down to a long-term deal.

The majestic left footer has risen to prominence in recent seasons and his
progress has already caught the attention of Arsene Wenger - who has been
scouting the player in recent months.

Now it is understood that United too, have also begun to keep tabs on the
midfielder - who won his first cap for Spain in October, and reports coming
back to Sir Alex Ferguson and his back-room staff are believed to have been
very favourable.

Both Wenger and Ferguson are also sure to be alerted to the fact that Puerta's
talks over a new deal have come to a halt without an agreement being reached.

"It has stalled a little; there are differences," Puerta told Marca.

"There is always toing and froing and we are at that point.

"Everybody wants to improve, but in order for them to give you what you deserve
you have to demonstrate it on the pitch and I am trying to do that."

Puerta admitted for the first time that he would need to consider all offers
available to him, but Sevilla remain his priority.

"I hope and I want us to reach an agreement so that we can bring an end to
this," he said.

"But you always listen to offers because if they are there it is for a reason,
it's because you're demonstrating your worth.

"But for me, the first option will always be Sevilla."

United's director of communications, is the latest club executive to be packing
a brown paper bag for a swift departure, after the loss of Nick Humby, the
finance director, and Andy Anson, the commercial director.

A puzzled Townsend, former media minder for Richard Caborn, the Sports
Minister, says he is not only staying but is buying a trendy apartment in
central Manchester, a sign of his commitment to a club on course to win the
Premiership for the first time during his tenure at Old Trafford. A replacement
for Anson is due soon, though, with a shortlist already drawn up and the new
man to be announced in the new year. Meanwhile, The Insider advises Townsend
-who has the unenviable job of trying to get Sir Alex Ferguson to talk to the
press -to check his desk is still there; if it is, he is definitely staying.'

[36] Lampard has hump with Lehmann
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 by cover4db:
"He has a way of looking down his nose at people. I certainly didn't say
anything that I feel warrants an explanation. For me, it's all in the heat of
battle and nonsense to start talking to the media about it afterwards. But the
other week myself and my cousin Jamie Redknapp were out to dinner in a London
restaurant and Lehmann was sitting just feet from us on another table. We
acknowledged him and he completely blanked both of us. In fact, when he left,
he walked right past our table and didn't even have the decency to say anything
- whether nice or rude! Perhaps Lehmann's more sensitive than the rest of us."
