[23] Fergie on FA Cup

Posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by ed:
"It is a competition which creates a special atmosphere, no doubt it, when you
look at all the shocks over the years. FA Cup history is full of United and
Villa teams. We both have great records. We are all looking forward to the game
and I hope we can get a good run. But we know it will not be easy against Villa
as they are a very committed team under Martin O'Neill."

[19] Adam Eckersley on loan to Barnsley?

Barnsley manager Simon Davey

"To sign a player of Adam's pedigree is always a coup for any club and he will
bring a lot of quality to our squad. He has spent time on loan with Royal
Antwerp and Brondby and he is a player I have admired for a while. He has
impressed me every time I have seen him play and he was recommended to us by
Sir Alex Ferguson. I spent a morning with Sir Alex three weeks ago when we
discussed a lot of things, including players, and Adam is a very highly thought

"Even if Henrik is not in the team he will contribute a lot because of his

"He knows he will be on the bench sometimes but he doesn't have a problem with
that. He learned that at Barcelona - and he won the Champions League for them,
which shows what he can achieve even from that position. Ferguson obviously
knows that and I am sure that is part of the reason he signed him.

"I remember when he was 15 and 16. He was obviously very good then but the
thing about Henrik was how bloody stubborn he was. He would not give up
anything. If he had put his mind to something, then he would achieve it. Even
then. That is what has made him such an extraordinary player, such a winner. He
was quite shy then and that has obviously changed but he is the same person he
was before he became a star."

[14] Mirror reckon Hargreaves and Bale deals almost done
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by tb:
Manchester United are confident of completing the signing of Owen Hargreaves
for £17million within a matter of days after upping their offer for the England
midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson remained guarded w hen quizzed on Hargreaves yesterday, but
it is understood United have been told by Bayern Munich that a deal can now be
finalised to bring the 25-year-old to Old Trafford.

United are also closing in on the £5m capture of Southampton's 17-year-old
defender Gareth Bale, beating off interest from rival clubs including Tottenham
and Arsenal, with a view to loaning him out once a deal is secured.

But Hargreavesre mains Fergie's big addition in the January transfer window and
the deal is poised to go ahead, despite the midfielder suffering a set back in
his recovery from a broken leg.

Hargreaves is expected to be offered a five-year deal by United on a wage of
around £60,000 a week.

[7] O'Neill: I'ts a bad draw
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by tb:
"United away is a poor draw for us. We were drawn away in every round of the
Carling Cup and you hoped we would get a bit of luck in the FA Cup against a
side 14 leagues below us!

"If we show the same determination as against Chelsea, then we think we will
give ourselves a bit of a chance. It will be hard for us because United are
flying, regardless of what side they put out.

"We have a chance, regardless of whatever anyone else thinks. We want to do
well. I'm not the type to come out with the 'we're concentrating on the league'
type of stuff.

"You don't need rousing for an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford. You want to play
against the best players and against Chelsea on Tuesday we competed for long
periods. We have to try and so the same against United."

[6] O'Neill: Fergie the Godfather
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by tb:
"Sir Alex is one of the great managers of all time. He is a throwback to the
old days of Shankly, Clough, Revie, Stein, Nicholson, Busby etc. Sir Alex is up
there with all of those and he has proved it over a lengthy period of time.

"In the days of those great, great managers I have mentioned, they didn't have
to contend with a lot of modern day problems like PLCs.

"Those people were able to basically run the clubs - and they ran them
successfully because they were very good. They were in charge.

"I think Sir Alex had the ability to adjust his management style. There have
been a lot of changes in the last 15 years and you've had to contend with a lot
of problems that weren't there in the first place.

"He had the ability, the wherewithal, the strength of character to not only
manage in the style he saw fit but to be able to transcend all those changes
that were being made.

"To be at a club like Manchester United for 20 years, where you have to
succeed, is extraordinary. He is the Godfather of the Premier League although I
am not sure how people in Sicily would take to that!"

boy some experience before we play European football.

---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by tb:
"Both are good finishers, and both are getting on in years and so have that
experience which they use in their movement and positional play in the penalty
box. Maybe that is their great strength, but that is where the similarities end.

"Whether Wayne plays depends on whether I decide to start with both Ole and
Henrik in the side, or just the one of them. It's more likely I will just start
with one of them.

[2] Fergie on Larsson in training
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, January 6, 2007 by tb:
"Henrik's training performances have been very good I have been very pleased
with that."

"He is very sharp and obviously a man who looks after himself, so we don't have
any concerns about that.

"Henrik's training has been excellent - very good, very sharp and some good
finishing. Everything I thought about the boy I have seen in training anyway,
so there has been nothing different from what I expected.

"I hope he scores, which would be nice because FA Cup ties are sometimes hard
affairs.

"His career speaks for him. I have been an admirer for years and on two or
three occasions I thought I had him, and didn't have him, but nevertheless his
performances over the years have been fantastic and his record at Celtic is
marvellous."

[43] Bardsley on loan at Villa?
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, January 5, 2007 by ed:
though late rumours of move to Bolton

below from sportinglife

'Manchester United full-back Phil Bardsley is set to join Aston Villa on loan
for the rest of the season.

Bardsley is ready to become Villa manager Martin O'Neill's first capture of the
January transfer window on Monday - the day after the FA Cup third round clash
between the sides at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old was on loan at Rangers for the first half of the campaign but
became surplus to requirements at Ibrox.

O'Neill is keen to strengthen his back four and right-back Bardsley's arrival
would allow former skipper Olof Mellberg to revert to his preferred role in the
centre of defence.

But it could put a question mark over the future of Northern Ireland skipper
Aaron Hughes, who has struggled to regain his place after recovering from
injury.

O'Neill is aware he has to bring in new blood to freshen up a squad which he
admits has been pushed to the limit during the opening half of the campaign.

In an ideal world he would like to sign quality players on long-term contracts
who can help Villa to re-emerge as a potent force after years in the doldrums.

But if that is not possible then O'Neill is looking at short-term captures and
Bardsley would fit the bill.

O'Neill said: "We have been tested to the limit and the players have done
remarkably well. Even if we wanted to try and rotate a bit we haven't had the
ability to do so.

"We could do with a little bit of help. The same group of players have gone
through all the games and I would imagine we would have had less chance to
rotate than most.

"That is not to evoke a lot of sympathy. That's our position and we are trying
to put it right.

"We might get players in during January and might still have the same problem
in February and that's the way the season goes, but we would be better off
having a bigger squad."

speaking to another Premiership club. He's not been in contact and the longer

not much you can do, we put a good package together to get him but life goes

[41] Indy on BA man
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, January 5, 2007 by ed:
'Martin George, who resigned as commercial director of British Airways last
year over price-fixing allegations, is in talks to join Manchester United in
the same role.

Mr George, a York City fan, is understood to have been in negotiations with the
Premiership club since before Christmas, but has not yet been offered the job
or decided whether to accept it.

Manchester United is the biggest football club in the world and has more than
50 million supporters. Taking on the job of commercial director would guarantee
Mr George a high-profile return to the business scene.

The club generated revenues of £160m last year, about a quarter of which came
from commercial activities. Malcolm Glazer, the American sports tycoon who paid
£800m for the club in May, 2005, wants to increase its revenues from the US and
Far East. Last year the club signed a £56m four-year shirt sponsorship deal
with the insurer AIG.

At one time, Mr George was tipped as a future chief executive of BA, but he was
forced to resign last October after admitting that "inappropriate"
conversations had taken place between members of his department and rival
airlines over the setting of fuel surcharges.

He had been placed on indefinite leave of absence after the Office of Fair
Trading raided BA's headquarters in June. BA's head of communications, Iain
Burns, who resigned at the same time as Mr George, takes up a new job as
vice-president of corporate communications at the United Arab Emirates airline
Etihad Airways next week.

Industry sources say that since the initial burst of activity by the OFT
occurred last June, during which time computer and telephone records were
removed from BA's offices, the investigation appears to have gone quiet.

The OFT investigation was sparked after the rival carrier Virgin Atlantic blew
the whistle. Anti-trust authorities in the US are also investigating the
alleged fixing of fuel surcharges by transatlantic airlines.

A Manchester United spokeswoman said: "The club is going through the process of
seeking a commercial director and an announcement will be made when that is
complete."

Mr George could not be reached for comment yesterday.'

resume full training with his team-mates in their training camp in Dubai.

The England star will instead take part in light training which will delay any
comeback plans the player had.

Hargreaves is now unlikely to be fit for Bayern's first competitive match of
2007 against Borussia Dortmund on January 26.'

'Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Polish international goalkeeper Tomasz
Kuszczak will replace Edwin van der Sar for this weekend's FA Cup tie with
Aston Villa.

The summer loan signing from West Brom has been restricted to just three starts
since arriving at Old Trafford, but has turned in fine performances each time
and will be given another runout against Martin O'Neill's side.

Speaking at his pre-game press briefing Sir Alex also confirmed that new
signing Henrik Larsson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will both play against the
Villans, but hinted that he was unsure whether both would start the game.'

Saturday. He went for a scan on the groin injury he picked up against Newcastle
and it was only a small problem."

What's the silliest or most stupid thing you've done or been caught up in over

Be it funny, bizarre or just plain sad we're after your tales of an event
you've kept hidden or rather not talk about until now.

It may have been something that sounded a good idea at the time, or you just
knew it was stupid all along.

"I've recalled one or two young players that have been out on loan, and we may
sign somebody else in January. Who knows? We may make a couple of signings. But
I do think we have the squad to handle the games coming up."
