[13] By Eckersley joins Barnsley on loan

from ESPN

'Barnsley have completed the loan signing of Manchester United defender Adam
Eckersley. The 21-year-old, who progressed through the ranks at Old Trafford,
will stay at Oakwell until the end of June. Eckersley has made one appearance
for Manchester United, playing the full 90 minutes in a 4-1 Carling Cup win
over Barnet in October 2005. He has also enjoyed loan spells at Belgian side
Royal Antwerp and Danish club Brondby. The left-back will go straight into
Simon Davey's squad for next weekend's home league match against Preston.'

[12] Guardian on Chelseas trying to get into United's 'Asian markets'

worth nothing this

'Two Manchester United-themed restaurants in Chengdu were recently forced to
close because customers were not willing to pay extra for the brand.'

'Chelsea Football Club's plans for world domination came a mouseclick closer to
realisation yesterday with a Chinese internet tie-up adding more than 100
million people to the club's potential fanbase.
The launch of a Mandarin language website in conjunction with China's biggest
portal, Sina, is part of an intensifying global contest for hearts and wallets
that pits Chelsea against Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

It will soon be followed by the release of a Bollywood film aimed at making
Stamford Bridge lovers out of India's middle-class, as well as a pre-season
tour to the United States by Jose Mourinho's team and an intensified Asia
marketing strategy with Adidas and Samsung.

With the world's biggest population and the fastest growing economy, China is
seen as having huge potential by football giants such as Manchester United and
Real Madrid, both of which have sent teams to tour here in recent years.
Apart from lucrative friendlies every two or three years, however, few foreign
clubs have made much money here because average incomes are still below £1,000
per year. Two Manchester United-themed restaurants in Chengdu were recently
forced to close because customers were not willing to pay extra for the brand.

Instead of opening their own outlets, Chelsea - which are neck and neck with
Manchester United in terms of popularity, according to market research surveys
- will focus their efforts on the internet, grassroots support and cooperation
with the national football association.

Their new website partner, Sina, is the most powerful force in the Chinese
internet, which has more than 120 million users. Sina will translate material
from Chelsea's English website and add comment from a local perspective in
return for a share of revenues from advertising, sponsorship, online sales and
membership subscriptions. Within a year, it is expected to turn in a profit.

At its launch, the website featured a video clip of Ashley Cole speaking
Mandarin with a cockney accent, still pictures of Frank Lampard kissing his
ring finger to celebrate a goal, and a haggard Mourinho reading from an autocue
about how much he is looking forward to answering questions from millions of
Chinese fans.

In the days and months ahead, Chelsea will also announce plans for a first-team
tour of China - possibly as early as 2008 - and the hosting of the Chinese
Olympic football team at the London club's training ground later this year. In
association with the Asian Football Confederation, Chelsea will also expand a
grassroots coaching programme from the current two cities - Qingdao and Wuhan -
to 15, including Beijing and Shanghai.

Dong Lu, a leading Chinese football journalist, said Chelsea appealed to
younger fans more than Manchester United or Real Madrid. "Their popularity has
grown in the past two or three years because of the impressive power of their
football. Until now, their fans have been scattered around a number of
different bulletin boards. Sina, as the biggest force in the Chinese internet,
can bring them together. There is great potential for the two to develop their
business."

But despite the emphasis on youth at the website launch ceremony, one older
Chelsea supporter also crept out of the woodwork - the British ambassador,
William Ehrman, who said he became a Blues fan in 1958. The Premier League has
a devoted following in China, thanks partly to the relative success of
homegrown players such as Sun Jihai at Manchester City and new arrivals such as
Zheng Zhi at Charlton.

Activities off the pitch are just as important in the race to be the world's
top football brand.

Paul Smith, the club's business affairs director, said he had just been to
India, which the club has identified as a potential growth market despite its
reputation as a cricket-mad nation. He revealed that Chelsea would make a
"cameo appearance" in an upcoming Bollywood film in which a key character is a
Blues' fan.

[11] Interview in Lawyer with United's legal bod

With Manchester United riding high in the Premiership, head of legal Patrick
Stewart is ensuring the club enjoys success off the field as well as on it. By
Steve Hoare

Organisation: Manchester United Ltd

Sector: Sport

Turnover: £160m (11 months to 30 June 2005)

Employees: 500

Head of Legal: Patrick Stewart

Reporting to: Financial director Nick Humby

Legal capability: One

Main law firms: Allen & Overy, Beachcroft, Brabners Chaffe Street, Wiggin

Patrick Stewart's CV
Education:
1990-95 - LLB (Hons), University of Glasgow
Work history:
1995-98 - trained at Burness;
1998-2001 - IP/IT solicitor at Maclay Murray & Spens;
2001-06 - legal manager and then senior counsel at Team Marketing;
2006-present - head of legal at Manchester United

Since I've been here things have been going really well. We've signed the
biggest shirt sponsorship deal, the stadium's capacity has increased to 76,000
and we're top of the league. There's a real feel-good factor about the place,
which people who are not here aren't really aware of," says Patrick Stewart,
head of legal at Manchester United.

This will come as great news to the millions of Man Utd supporters, but may be
greeted with derision by millions more. Despite Jose Mourinho's best efforts,
no team splits opinions quite like Man Utd.

After the turmoil of the Glazer takeover it seems that things are running more
smoothly at Man Utd and the club's first in-house lawyer is thrilled to be part
of it.

Since 1967 Brabners Chaffe Street senior partner Maurice Watkins acted as a
quasi-in-house lawyer, enjoying a seat on the board from 1984 until November
2004. He was the board's longest-serving member when he was voted off by the
incoming Glazers.

Watkins is still a non-executive director and remains involved in the legal
side, focusing mainly on football aspects such as transfers and disciplinary
matters.

"He is one of the world's leading authorities on football and regulatory
matters," says Stewart.

Stewart joined Man Utd in March last year from Team Marketing, the marketing
agency that deals with the sponsorship and television rights for the Uefa
Champions League.

The decision to bring in an in-house legal function was made before the
Glazers' arrival, but it is something the Glazers supported.

The initial impetus for having an in-house legal function was to impose cost
efficiencies, but more significantly it has brought a more commercial approach
to deal-making.

Stewart explains: "I take personal responsibility for sponsorship contracts.
Anything on the marketing and media side I either do myself or take a very
close interest in. The second part is coordinating external legal advisers and
the third element is to improve systems of contract management."

The first thing Stewart had to deal with when he joined the club was the
largest shirt sponsorship deal ever completed in the UK. Stewart used no
outside counsel. The deal with insurer AIG, which took its advice from
Addleshaw Goddard, was, in Stewart's own words, "a baptism of fire".

"It was a great start - very high profile and very important to United," he
adds. "I felt lucky to have that as a first significant deal. From a legal
perspective there was nothing particularly unusual, but from a commercial
perspective it was a US company investing in a UK football club with the main
aim of raising its profile in Asia. That created a very interesting dynamic and
that dynamic underpinned a lot of the negotiations."

Since then Stewart has worked on a string of deals with companies such as Audi,
Betfair, Budweiser and secondary ticket exchange Viagogo.

The deal with Viagogo allows fans to exchange tickets that they cannot use.
Some have questioned the legality of secondary ticket exchanges, but Stewart
says: "The exchange is only among members. We see it as discouraging touting."

In addition to Brabners, Stewart also turns to Wiggin partner Sean James for
some media rights issues and Beachcroft for HR and liquor licensing advice.

Allen & Overy (A&O) has inherited a corporate role with the club after
corporate partners Andrew Ballheimer and Richard Hough advised the Glazers on
the takeover.

There have been some residual matters following the takeover, with A&O senior
associate Edward Barnett picking up the reins.

"Most of the post-takeover activity happened before my arrival," says Stewart,
"but there is the issue of managing dissenting shareholders."

To that end Man Utd has an investor services company called Computershare,
which manages dissenting shareholders.

There have been a few of them since the Glazers took over, but few will be too
upset with the club's current Premiership position. Even less so if it dips its
foot into the transfer market this month to secure a strong holding midfielder.

Of the onfield side, the only area Stewart would get involved in is image
rights - a strange, new concept that nobody had really heard of until David
Beckham transferred to Real Madrid.

"From a legal perspective it's a grey area because there's no definitive UK law
on this. Image rights, as a term, is just used to bundle together a number of
rights that celebrities feel they can exploit," explains Stewart.

Stewart will leave the rest of the transfer window dealings to chief executive
David Gill and Watkins and his team at Brabners. Those who thought Watkins'
influence at the club may be declining after the takeover and Stewart's
appointment are mistaken. Brabners also helps out on the commercial side, where
partner Jason Smith advises.

"The Brabners relationship is very close and very good," concludes Stewart.
"They've provided me with a great deal of support."

[10] Indy on Larsson staying
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, January 9, 2007 by ed:
'It was always when, not if, the question of Henrik Larsson extending his Old
Trafford career would come to the fore, but even Manchester United were
pleasantly surprised at the speed and source of the debate yesterday when the
striker's Swedish employers, Helsingborg, admitted the 35-year-old could
feature in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans until the end of the season.

One game, one goal and one performance exuding intelligence is all it has taken
for the "Larsson Must Stay" bandwagon to roll off the blocks, with the
veteran's contribution in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Aston Villa prompting the
Helsingborg coach Stuart Baxter to interrupt his holiday in Dubai to declare;
"He would appear to have vindicated the whole deal."

That unique deal, which originated in a discussion between Baxter and friend
Jim Lawler, the United chief scout, in early November, saw the former Celtic
and Barcelona favourite agree to join Ferguson for a 10-week loan period that
coincided with the pre-season in Sweden and then return to his hometown club on
12 March.

Although Ferguson and Larsson have repeatedly insisted there is no prospect of
an extension - the striker continued to diffuse the issue yesterday when he
stated: "It is all ifs and I am just taking one match at a time," - it is
inconceivable that United will not attempt to keep the Swede for their
Premiership and Champions' League pursuit. To that end, the admission by Baxter
and Helsingborg chairman Stig-Inge Fredin that Larsson can stay until May if he
wishes will not have been lost on the Old Trafford hierarchy.

"It is a matter for our board but if Manchester United and Henrik have special
wishes then of course we are going to listen," Fredin said. "It's up to Henrik.
If he wants to stay then we'll open that discussion with United. We will not
stand in his way. However, as long as nothing new is on the cards, there's no
reason to speculate. At this point we are assuming that Henrik will be back on
12 March."

It was only before Christmas that Ferguson insisted United would have to play
fair by Helsingborg and allow their prized asset to return for the start of the
Swedish season. "We wouldn't want to intrude on Helsingborg's ambitions," he
said. "They have been very fair and we have to return that favour."

However, it is evident the final say belongs to Larsson and United are expected
to open negotiations with Helsingborg about an extension - which will involve a
nominal fee - in due course.

"We are in a world where we are not really able to force Henrik back," Baxter
said. "Sweden being Sweden they would probably think of the person and not the
footballer. There would be a discussion between Henrik and the club but he has
given us no indication this is any more than the agreement we have.

"When he came back it was so he could get his family established in Sweden
during the last two years of his career. The attraction of Manchester United
was a short-term deal. If that has changed where an extension would mean extra
finance for the club that's very nice, but we have still got to try to make a
team. But I am going to try to not worry about it. We knew this situation might
happen when we did the deal. It is Manchester United, after all, not Bristol
Rovers."

[8] Larsson wants more

“This has been the perfect start for me but I want this to be just the start. I
aim to score many more goals for Manchester United. This has been a wonderful
opportunity at the end of my career and I aim to take it. The club are in a
great position in the Premiership, Champions League and the Cup. It would be a
dream come true for me if I can help them succeed in one or all of these
competitions.”

[7] Sven's Ast Tord Grip on Larsson
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, January 9, 2007 by ed:
“Cantona and Larsson both score important goals and you could argue Cantona was
also a team player. But that is where the similarities end. Larsson is timid,
he has no ego at all and he doesn’t shout at anyone on the pitch or off it. He
is a very quiet man. He was like that in 1994 when I was part of Sweden’s
coaching team and we won the bronze medal at the World Cup. He was never full
of himself. From what I have seen so far, it will be a winning combination. One
day, when he is older perhaps, Rooney will want to play more like Larsson and
he will have the chance now to learn how to do it. Larsson will have a great
time in England and score a lot of goals with Rooney as his partner. It works
best when you have a player like Larsson to get on the end of Rooney’s work,
using such expert movement in the area to score. If Henrik has the opportunity
to play the rest of the English season with United I think he should take it.”

[6] A great read on 80s United
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, January 9, 2007 by ed:
Now out, and highly recommended, Andy Mitten interviews 11 famous United
players for their story

Here's what those who've reviewed 'We're The Famous Man United' have said about
it so far...

"Some of the very best interviews with former United players that I've ever
read. Andy Mitten has a remarkable ability to get people to open up and reveal
all. Full of great anecdotes, detail and colour, bringing back just what it
was like following United in the pre-Ferguson era."

Michael Crick.

"A terrific antidote to the banal sporting autobiography. Next time someone
asks 'Where have the gameís characters gone?' here's an answer: They're
between the covers of We're the Famous Man United. Candid, full of
illuminating anecdotes and with an appeal well beyond those old enough to
remember the 70s and 80s and far beyond the borders of United fandom."

Ian Hawkey, The Sunday Times.

"Anyone who wants to read about nice, clean-cut footballers listening to Luther
Vandross and going to bed at 9.30pm should look away now. Andy Mitten has
compiled the warts-and-all, blow-by-blow forensic examination of what really
went on at Englandís biggest club in the 1980s. Utterly compelling."

Daniel Taylor, The Guardian.

"Twenty years on from their heyday, the players of the eighties have nothing to
hide. And even if they had, Andy Mitten would find it out. By turns
jaw-dropping, enraging, staggering and alarming, but always, always charged
with affection and enthusiasm, this book is what nostalgia is all about."

Jim White, The Daily Telegraph.

"First came the Busby Babes and now the modern United is 'all grown up'. This
hugely entertaining book proves that during the intervening 'teenage years' the
lads had themselves a bit of fun."

Graham Hunter, Sky.

"This book will define United work in this era like Jim White's book did a
decade ago. We knew many of these players as United heroes, but the fans knew
little about the real men inside the Red shirts they wore. Andy Mitten takes
characters we cheered on the terraces and allows us to see them in a new light;
away from the limelight. Tinged with humour, reflection and at times sadness,
these were the players who missed the golden wages on offer in today's football
by a decade yet played in an era that many fans fondly recall as they watched
gifted footballers giving their all. Away from the hyperbole surrounding
today's stars, these were real characters, real men, and here we see their real
stories - be it uplifting or eye opening. Life's ups and downs; before, during
and after their United careers. Mitten's honest approach and incisive
interviewing technique allows us a revealing and at times startling account of
what it was like to play for Manchester United and the life thereafter. Highly
recommended to young and old football fan alike, it will give a new perspective
on household names. Ideal for those who lived the 1980s generation, and those
who wish they had."

Saints have already rejected a £5million bid from United for left-back Bale,

Bale’s agent David Manasseh said: “I do not know what all the fuss is about.

“Gareth has 18 months left on his contract, boss George Burley has said he will
not be leaving and he is happy to stay.”

with our best players. Owen is a very skilful defensive player and there are
not many of his calibre around. It would be crazy to sell him at this moment as
he is not replaceable. We would have to start buying players and nobody knows

"We must have a go at it (the treble). There is no point in being negative,
let's enjoy it. We have a good squad of players and
are playing some terrific football. We need to achieve consistency over the
second half of the campaign. Historically we do okay at this point. In the
past, even if we have been erratic earlier in the season, we seem to have drawn
a second wind. I am sure our present position will drive us on even more. We
are pleased to
be where we are. We are here for the long haul plus we have youth and strength
on our side. We are fully capable of winning the championship. Chelsea will
come back at us. The key is our own form and what we do ourselves. If we do it
right, we do not need to keep looking over our shoulder.''

was arguably one of the toughest groups. We're in the semi-final of the

concerned about that position, there's a lot more people who should be more
concerned. I think you've got to put it into perspective. Would you rather be
six points clear? Of course. But this is not the end of the season and this is
not doom and gloom. I think we're in a very good position with a very strong

[22] PA on Hargreaves

Posted Monday, January 8, 2007 by ed:
'Bayern Munich's general manager Uli Hoeness has stated that Owen Hargreaves
will not leave the club during the January transfer window

Hoeness insists that Hargreaves "will definitely not be leaving this winter.
Beyond that, we will see".

Earlier this week, club president Franz Beckenbauer claimed Bayern would listen
to a 30 million euro (£20million) offer for the player.

He said: "We are currently building a team and at some time the question will
arise as to whether Owen is indispensable. In any case, we have all the trump
cards in our hands."

Rather than selling, Hoeness is more interested in buying at present having
completed a deal to bring Germany talent Jan Schlaudraff from Alemannia Aachen
to Bavaria for next season.

Hoeness has vowed that Bayern will soon recapture their old clout in the
transfer market after losing key men like Michael Ballack recently.

"We have lost six really strong players recently and have only partly replaced
them," he added. "In the next transfer period, we will catch up.

"We have a few things already planned with one transfer almost completed, and
the others are proceeding well."

[21] Matt Dickinson Times match report
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, January 8, 2007 by ed:
'It will prove a tearful wrench for both parties if another ten weeks truly is
as long as Henrik Larsson can spend at Manchester United — an issue already
under review. This great stadium has overawed many good players, particularly
strikers, but the former Celtic and Barcelona forward could not have looked
more at home on the grand stage.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snatched victory, and much of the glory, when his shot
went through Gabor Kiraly’s hands to propel United into today’s FA Cup
fourth-round draw, but most of the afternoon had been spent fruitfully watching
his fellow Scandinavian striker on his debut in England. He is trying to do in
ten weeks what Solskjaer has been doing for ten years at Old Trafford, but
already he looks a fine asset.

The idea of him returning to Helsingborgs to play in front of 10,000 people
just as the English and European campaigns reach “squeaky-bum time”, to borrow
Sir Alex Ferguson’s memorable phrase, will surely be the cause of much
agonising if this clever performance proves typical of his brief loan spell. It
was not only his goal — a wonderfully executed finish — that brought a full
house at Old Trafford to its feet, but the movement, the turns, the lay-offs
and, on one occasion, a bit of Ronaldoesque juggling followed by an aerial
back-heel to a team-mate. Larsson’s only disappointment will be that he did not
score earlier. He had set himself up with one neat pirouette in the first half,
only to shoot at Kiraly, and then struck the goalkeeper’s legs when put through
by Michael Carrick’s chip.

In the 55th minute, he finally hit the target, taking one touch and then using
minimal backlift to find the top corner from near the penalty spot. The loan
fee of £800,000 split between player and his Swedish club looks money well
spent.

United had dominated the first half, but if there was a weakness aside from the
failure to convert, they were missing a dynamic presence in central midfield,
which remains their greatest failing. With Paul Scholes rested, Ferguson had
opted for Ryan Giggs alongside Carrick. The Welshman has had a good season, but
United lacked urgency and bite at their heart — the qualities that they
eventually expect from Owen Hargreaves.

Without that ruthlessness, they allowed Villa to come back in the second half.
Martin O’Neill’s men had defended obdurately in a goalless draw with Chelsea in
midweek and they were similarly resilient as they attempted to end a run of
nine successive defeats against United stretching back more than four years.

Larsson’s goal ten minutes after half-time had come just when Villa were
starting to be more adventurous. Isaiah Osbourne impressed in the centre of
midfield and the teenager had a wonderful opportunity to equalise in the 69th
minute, but Tomasz Kuszczak, standing in for the rested Edwin van der Sar,
saved.

It had been Villa’s first real chance of the afternoon, but another was to
follow five minutes later when Osbourne and Gary Cahill mis-hit shots on the
edge of the area as United failed to clear a corner. The ball fell to Milan
Baros, played onside by Rio Ferdinand, and he finished, to vindicate O’Neill’s
decision to send him on for Juan Pablo Ángel.

Off went Larsson to be replaced by Solskjaer, but Villa were defending stoutly
as the match went into added time — four minutes of it proving much to the
prescient O’Neill’s dismay. One of those minutes had elapsed when United set
off on another counter-attack, Cristiano Ronaldo feeding Wayne Rooney. The
England forward had been instrumental in Larsson’s opener, holding on to the
ball when others might have rushed, and he chose the right option again as he
slipped the ball to Solskjaer to his right. The goals are not coming for
Rooney, but his effort is faultless.

His pass found Solskjaer, still with work to do, but, as Alan Shearer pointed
out on BBC Television afterwards, the most important thing is at least to get
the shot on target. Do that often enough and you will benefit from the odd
mistake or lucky bounce — the former in this case, as Kiraly ruined an
afternoon of good work. Heartbreak for the visiting team’s fans, glee at the
Stretford End.

O’Neill was sympathetic, as he has to be, given that Kiraly, on loan from
Crystal Palace, is his best and only goalkeeper in the absence of the injured
Thomas Sorensen and Stuart Taylor. The Hungarian must return to the scene of
the crime in the Barclays Premiership on Saturday.

It was a cruel introduction to the FA Cup for Randy Lerner, the Villa owner,
but Solskjaer has a knack of these late interventions. While not celebrated as
much as his goal in the 1999 Champions League final, his winner in the 2-1
victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round the same year was also
instrumental in the pursuit of the treble.

Ferguson talked afterwards of pairing Larsson and Solskjaer together and what
they lack in pace they more than make up in guile, accuracy and intelligence.
An FA Cup quarter-final in March could be Larsson’s last game, but the
likelihood is that his deal will be extended.'

[17] Times on Chelsea unrest
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, January 8, 2007 by ed:
'CHELSEA’S winter wobbles in the Premiership have led to unrest in the
champions’ dressing room over the contribution of Michael Ballack, the German
midfielder signed last summer from Bayern Munich.

After last weekend’s disappointing home draw with Fulham — Chelsea’s second in
a week to mid-table visitors and part of a run in which they conceded eight
goals in four league games — the striker Didier Drogba and midfielder Claude
Makelele had to be prevented from confronting their manager Jose Mourinho over
Ballack’s lack of effectiveness.

Last night it was reported that continued behind-the-scenes irritations at the
club may lead to the manager quitting at the end of the season to take up a job
with either Juventus or Internazionale in Italy. According to the reports, Guus
Hiddink, the Russian national team coach, would step into his shoes at Stamford
Bridge.

Senior players at Chelsea believe that Ballack is not pulling his weight, does
not work hard enough defensively and has failed to mesh well with his new
colleagues in attack. The issue has been raised in team meetings, only to be
met by an angry, near word-for-word, repetition of Mourinho’s defence of
Ballack last month.

“The fans don’t make the team, I make the team,” said Mourinho in the aftermath
of a narrow victory over Newcastle United in which elements of the home support
jeered the German. “I don’t select players because of the fans or comments in
the press. I select players from my analysis of the team. I have analysis
through scientific technology and, based on my vision and knowledge of the
game, Ballack is still untouchable.” The manager had previously named the
German among nine players whose places in the first team were guaranteed.'

"I spoke to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson a few days ago about Bardsley, and he
wouldn't mind a deal at all. But, like anything else, until things are signed I
won't take it for granted. I hope he will join us this week. We just want to
start building up the squad a wee bit to give the players a helping hand"

player himself

"It is a three month loan deal and I have to be back when the Swedish league
starts so I don't think it is going to happen"

Helsingborg coach Stuart Baxter

"While it is very early to speculate, it could happen. We are in a world where
we are not really able to force Henrik back. Sweden being Sweden they would
probably think of the person and not the footballer. There would be a
discussion between Henrik and the club but he has given us no indication this
is any more than the agreement we have. We knew this situation might happen
when we did the deal. It is Manchester United, after all, not Bristol Rovers."
