But the difficulty of course is the form of the team and that I have so many players playing so well. Im trying to be fair to everyone, but it is hard. All I can say is that he is improving all the time, he has been terrific in training. Im thinking that when Henrik Larsson goes back to Helsingborg in March, Alan could become a very important player to us. I think he sees that himself, and hopefully that is the case. It's just a matter of getting his timing and his confidence back again. He's coming along fine. He's been in the squad over the last few weeks but the team is picking itself at the moment and when everyone is fit it's difficult even to pick the subs. http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10367483 City breaks from £99 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10280817 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [14] Fergie on United turning down any Ronaldo bid --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "I'm confident of that, very confident. It would be the Glazers' decision, obviously, and we always refer things to the Glazer family because they are the owners. But they've been great, fantastic." --------------------------------- [13] More Fergie on Academy --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "If you remember, Howard Wilkinson's academy plan was perfectly correct. He said he hoped England would win the World Cup in 10 years, but the academy system has been going eight years now, so I can't see it. I think it's seriously in danger of falling apart. If you were to examine it, you would see countless flaws in it. Some of them aren't being run properly now and teams are not able to afford it. At some point the chairman or owner of that club is going to say, 'Well, where are all these players?' If I go to try and buy an English player the prices are horrendous, so it forces you to go abroad sometimes and buy players, so it's our own fault. I would prefer to see four or five British-based or home-grown players." --------------------------------- [12] Fergie on Smith --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "Steve has made a marvellous contribution to the Premiership this year. What is very encouraging is that he has done it mostly with British-based players, which says a lot about the way he has gathered his squad together. It is the duty of every manager to try to get the best team they can but at a time when there is a contentious issue over the number of foreigners in our league, he has done it in a way which is surprising people." --------------------------------- [11] Fergie on Smith --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "He's training terrific but the difficulty, of course, is the form of the team. He's been training excellently and we gave him a [reserve] game against Liverpool and he showed he needed a game. When we put him in midfield though he did really well. His training is outstanding and improving all the time. I could play him tomorrow, no problem at all. The difficulty is we have got so many players playing so well. I guess it's selfish but I'm thinking that, when Henrik Larsson goes back to Helsingborgs, Alan Smith will be very important to us. I think he sees that as well and hopefully that's the case." --------------------------------- [10] More Ruud --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "United were big but Real Madrid are on another level. I could have gone to Bayern Munich or Milan but it had to be Real. This club has a special allure - everything about it oozes elegance, style and pure class. There was a break-up in the relationship between two people. I exploded [at the Carling Cup final against Wigan] and began swearing at Ferguson because I felt he had kicked my soul. That was the moment things died and, after that, things would never be good, they could never be the same again. It was because our relationship through the years was so warm that this situation was so painful. Ultimately, the way things went says plenty about the football world. But, for me, that isn't a licence to treat people like that. These are considerations you make and, of course, I could have been calculated and thought - this is the way the football world is, I'll stay where I am and take the easy money without any hassles." "In Spain, we see a lot of Manchester United games. The first time I watched them, I found myself thinking: 'There he is [Ferguson], that...' And that felt good. It was the same with Holland. But now I am at peace with it all and have no problem watching games. After the World Cup, I accepted what happened and moved on. "Edwin is a good captain of the Holland team and a good person, and that makes me feel good. Nobody else [supported me] but it doesn't matter. I understand why. I react the way I do because I'm at an age where I have experience. Van der Sar is in the same position. He's 36, the captain, and in a position to do that but young players think to themselves: 'I want to play for the national team or for my club so I'll hold my tongue.'" Why should he not take advantage of that? The problem is not Arsene Wenger, the problem is the system. Something has to be done about it because it is seriously in danger of falling apart. There are countless flaws. Some are not even being run properly now because clubs are just not able to afford it. It costs us around £4million to run our academy yet because there is a restriction in travel Manchester United and particularly Arsenal have to look worldwide in order to get the best young players into the club. When the academies were set up, Howard Wilkinson said England would win the World Cup within 10 years. Well, they have been going eight now and I can't see it. You can find talent. There are very few natural footballers in the world. Most are produced by practice and you can see that in what the Brazilians do, or lads like Cristiano Ronaldo, who continues to practise long after training has finished. We have to pay more attention to the issue of homegrown players. There have been a number of theories flying about but the recommendations of having four or five British-produced players in your team is a sensible one." --------------------------------- [6] Have you seen a truly dodgy fake shirt? --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: If you have any pics of really terrible looking fake United merchandise (dodgy badges/crests/colour or misspelt names for example) for our dodgy gear section in the fanzine, or see any on your travels, please take a pic and send to us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] - thanks --------------------------------- [5] Fergie on Academy --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "If you remember, Howard Wilkinson said he hoped England would win the World Cup in 10 years. The academy system has been going eight years now, so I can't see it. The system is not working. Because of the hour's restriction in terms of travel, ourselves, and in particular Arsenal, have to look somewhere else. Other clubs are starting to do that, too. Liverpool are starting to enter Spain in a big way." http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2051413-5042808 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10387791 Hotels in Manchester Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news highly recommended, Andy Mitten interviews 11 famous United players for their story Pre-order the Harry Potter book out on July 21st, delivered directly to your door on the day of release in the UK for £8.99 Pre-order Borat with Amazon out in March The Doc has new book out Paul McGrath's Back from the Brink --------------------------------- [4] Ruud prefers Madrid? --------------------------------- Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed: "United were big, but Real Madrid are on another level. France centre back Sebastien Squillaci got the winner in the 89th minute when he deflected a Jeremy Toulalan freekick into the net to steal the win. The result gives Lyon a 14-point lead over RC Lens, who travel to Monaco on Sunday, and a confidence boost ahead of next week's Champions League clash against AS Roma. "It might be the turning point of the season," Lyon coach Gerard Houllier told French TV channel Canal Plus. "It was tough against a Lille side who do not let you play your game." Brazilian striker Fred had cancelled out Lille's opener -- scored by Johan Audel seven minutes after the break following a poor clearance by Cris -- with a freekick in the 83rd minute. Lille, who stay on 39 points, are now 18 points adrift of Lyon, who travel to Roma in the Champions League first knockout round on Wednesday. Lille coach Claude Puel, whose team host Premier League leaders Manchester United in the same competition on Tuesday, said: "We lost the game on details. They did not have an opportunity until they scored". Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye had provided the sole highlight of the first half when he hit Gregory Coupet's bar with a fine shot from 18 metres. Lyon, missing influential midfielder Juninho through suspension, never seemed in contention until Fred equalised.
