[18] Reuters on Lille
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
Lille head into Tuesday's Champions League home clash with Manchester United
after a morale-sapping run of results that has undermined confidence at the
Ligue 1 club.
Short on goals and unable to see out a result to the final whistle in recent
games, the conditions are not ideal for a last-16 first leg with Alex
Ferguson's Premier League leaders.
Lille looked set for victory over champions Olympique Lyon on Friday, only to
concede goals from striker Fred and defender Sebastien Squillaci in the last
seven minutes to lose 2-1 at home.
"It's tough at the moment," said the northern side's coach Claude Puel. "We
have to do something to prevent these kind of setbacks from happening again.
"We had the game under control, we played pretty well for most of the match --
but we got caught out."
There was a sense of deja vu for a Lille side who have been struggling to find
their attacking bite since the championship resumed after the winter break.
Lille have scored five goals in nine games in all competitions and have not
scored two goals in a league game since a 2-2 draw with St Etienne on Dec. 10.
Before going down to Lyon, they had lost 1-0 at mid-table Toulouse, who slotted
home the winner in the last minute.
QUESTIONS ASKED
"This has nothing to do with chance. We need to ask ourselves some questions,"
said midfielder Ludovic Obraniak. "We have to avoid the same kind of mistakes
against United."
Striker Nicolas Fauvergue added: "We must learn to hang on until the final
whistle. It's true, we are not at our best before this game with United."
To make matters worse, Lille will be without their main goalscorer, Kader
Keita, who is suspended.
On Friday, Puel rested several influential players such as Mathieu Chalme,
Nicolas Plestan and Mathieu Debuchy, who are almost certain to start on Tuesday.
Ferguson also re-shuffled his pack for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Reading at
Old Trafford and ended with up only a 1-1 draw for his trouble. However, it
means he should at least be able to field a full-strength side.
Wayne Rooney returns to the starting line-up from a domestic suspension, while
Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar should make his return from a broken nose,
taking over from Tomasz Kuszczak.
Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo made his comeback on Saturday after a heavy
cold, while central midfielder Paul Scholes, a second-half substitute against
Reading, is bound to start.
France striker Louis Saha will probably lead the attack against his
compatriots, supported by Rooney and Ronaldo, as Ferguson continues his bid to
match United's Champions League success in 1999.
Probable teams
Lille: 1-Tony Sylva; 20-Gregory Tafforeau, 25-Nicolas Plestan, 4-Efstathios
Tavlaridis, 21-Mathieu Chalme; 2-Mathieu Debuchy, 17-Jean II Makoun, 12-Mathieu
Bodmer, 29-Stephane Dumont; 35-Ludovic Obraniak, 14-Peter Odemwingie
United: 1-Edwin van der Sar; 2-Gary Neville, 5-Rio Ferdinand, 15-Nemanja Vidic,
3-Patrice Evra; 7-Cristiano Ronaldo, 18-Paul Scholes, 16-Michael Carrick,
11-Ryan Giggs; 8-Wayne Rooney, 9-Louis Saha
Referee: Eric Braamhaar (Netherlands)

"He is a player who belongs to Manchester. I have good institutional relations
with (United chief executive) David Gill and we have not made an offer for
Cristiano. Of course, he is one of the best players in the world, he is young,
he has a good projection. But we are very happy with the players in our team
and we are not making any offer for any player. I don't want to disturb any
team talking about their players. This is not the moment. I think we have to
respect the clubs we play against. We are very concentrated right now on our
aims and challenge for this season, to win the Spanish League. If I said
something about Cristiano Ronaldo, it seems as though I don't respect
Manchester United. I do respect Manchester United. Mr Alex Ferguson is a great
manager and David Gill is a friend."

'Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has sent a heartfelt message of
condolence to the family of a lifelong fan.

Civil servant Martin 'Faceman' Cleary (52), from Whitehead, Co Antrim, died of
a heart attack just over a week ago.

Sir Alex sent a letter saying he was "deeply saddened" to learn of Martin's
death. He wrote: "We know that the days and months ahead will be most
difficult, but trust that you will find comfort in God and with each other at
this very sad time.

"The pain of losing someone dear to you is very hard, but the one thing that
cannot be taken away from you is the wonderful memories you will have of your
time together.

"I know that these words seem of little help, but trust that these words of
comfort and the knowledge that you are in our thoughts and prayers will sustain
you in your sorrow."

Martin, a member of Carrickfergus Manchester United Supporters Club, helped
best friend Keith Norris carry the giant 'Big Lily' flag to games across the
globe.

He appeared alongside Keith in TV documentaries and contributed to his book, My
Big Lily.

Keith said: "He was my best friend and the inspiration for Big Lily. When
interviewed by Manchester United Magazine, he told the story of how, when
accused by his wife of loving Man United more than her, he replied that he
loved Man City more than her!

"He was absolutely nuts about Eric Cantona and his house was a shrine to the
Frenchman.

"His Manchester United hat, which was rarely off his head, went to his grave
with him."

[15] Observer on Academy
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
'Two of the most respected coaches charged with operating the academy system
have added their voices to the growing criticism that the expensive youth
development is failing to deliver the players who will make the England team
competitive.

Paul McGuinness, manager of the Manchester United youth team, and Ron Reid,
responsible for Sheffield United's successful academy, have agreed with Sam
Allardyce's remarks, first reported in The Observer last week, that a
generation of English football talent is in danger of being lost, in part
because of the inadequacies of the academies.

'The recent criticism is fair. At our club we don't think the current structure
is the best way to bring players through,' McGuinness said. 'The whole thing
should be better from grassroots all the way through.
'Basically we need to return to how the great players were trained in the
past,' he added. 'There's too much coaching and not enough football at the
moment. You can travel an hour-and-a-half for a game and a player might only
get 20 minutes on the field. In my opinion to get kids playing more football
from a younger age is the most important thing.

McGuiness also supported the Bolton manager when he claimed that wider
problems, particularly in the education system, were hampering the game's
production of young talent. 'Allardyce is definitely right, there is not enough
sport played at school and there are not enough athletes coming through. That
works its way up to our level, too. If things aren't changed we will start to
fall behind. The players have to be good enough to get into our teams. You
can't blame managers for not picking players that aren't good enough.'

Allardyce also won support from Reid, the manager of the Sheffield United
academy responsible for producing first-team regulars such as Phil Jagielka,
Michael Tonge and Nick Montgomery. 'I agree with Sam. When we were young lads
schools were much more demanding when it came to physical activity,' Reid said.
'We are living in a different society now and there is much more of a need to
be self-motivated. It is very easy for kids to sit down and watch television or
switch on the computer and play Championship Manager. Society has changed.

'Nowadays the biggest thing we try to work on with the young players is their
personality. We need to make them more committed to a healthy lifestyle and in
many ways the academies are now doing the jobs the schools should be doing.'
Reid believes, like Allardyce, that this is a national problem and that as a
nation we are becoming fat and lazy. 'Parents want more for their kids than
they had, and you can't argue with that, but consequently kids get things on a
plate. Sixty quid for a pair of trainers? "There you go, son". When I was
younger everything wasn't quite as instantaneous. We had to save up until we
could afford things, or go out and get a paper round.

'Kids are different now, and that is reflected in their lack of personality.
The top players have a personality, something extra other than the technique. I
would much rather meet a lad who has a bit of an edge to him, because you get
plenty nowadays who come along and don't say anything.'

Such comments come at the end of a week when Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger
and Terry Venables have all backed Allardyce's claims. Indeed, the Manchester
United manager defended Arsenal's right to look overseas for players when
homegrown talent is both scarce and expensive.

'Wenger is very strong on French football and he knows a lot about African
players as well, so why shouldn't he make the most of his knowledge?' Ferguson
asked. 'I don't have a problem with that. The problem lies with the system
here. I don't think the academy system is working, and that forces clubs like
Arsenal and ourselves to look elsewhere.'
Venables, the England assistant manager, added: 'The academy system hasn't
really borne fruit in the way we hoped. It is difficult for local boys when
there are players coming from around the world.'

[14] From the People

Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
'FOOTY giants Manchester United have been raided by immigration chiefs hunting
for illegal immigrant staff.

They swooped on the Old Trafford outfit to quiz two dozen foreign working,
mainly kitchen hands.

One of those questioned had just been named Employee of the Month in the club's
magazine.

AUnited insider said: "To have featured him the mag is doubly embarrassing for
the club. It's clear the proper checks hadn't been made or this person would
not have been employed."

Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils came under the spotlight because they use scores
of casual staff.

And the timing of the raid meant star players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano
Ronaldo were left without their usual lunch.

The insider said: "Instead of the to have sarnies. Some of them weren't too
impressed but when the situation was explained to them they saw the funny side."

Officials spent a day quizzing workers and checking the books of the
Premiership leaders. One man was arrested and faces deportation.

A United spokesman said: "We were asked by the police and the immigration
authorities to help with their enquiries. We cannot comment any further."

[13] SUN on Evra
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
'PATRICE EVRA has revealed the embarrassing dressing room secret of Manchester
United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo — the Portuguese winger has his own personal
mirror.
French defender Evra says Ronaldo, who will line up against Lille in the
Champions League tomorrow, is known to the squad as Playboy.

He explained: “Cristiano makes me laugh because he is the only one to have his
personal mirror in the dressing room. He spends hours doing his hair and
putting on his gel. He loves his body.”

Evra has delivered his own light-hearted view of United’s stars but captain
Gary Neville may not appreciate his sense of humour.

For Evra reckons the team cracks up when Neville’s face — he calls him Mr
100,000 Volts — starts twitching.

He said: “Gary talks very quickly and gets facial twitches. He often makes
little grimaces as if he were receiving an electric shock. That makes us laugh
a lot and Cristiano Ronaldo takes him off perfectly.”

Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar may not be too happy, either, with Evra’s verdict.

The left-back revealed: “Edwin, who is The Albatross, is performing a lot
better with us than when he was with Fulham.

“He admitted to me that he slackened off a bit there. That is impossible at
United.”

Co-defenders Mikael Silvestre and Rio Ferdinand are given the nicknames by Evra
of Creatine and Snoop Dog.

Wayne Rooney is The Hummer because ‘he’s a four-wheel drive who destroys
everything in his path,’ while the United line-up is completed by Paul ‘The
Pitbull’ Scholes, Ryan ‘The Rocket’ Giggs, Ole ‘The Legend’ Solskjaer and Louis
‘The Panther’ Saha.'

[12] Watching United around the world?
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
Reds are here, Reds are there!

We're looking for two sets of contributions here. Firstly Reds who live abroad
- detailing what it's like watching United where you are from and secondly from
Reds who've seen United in the oddest of places around the world...

1) What's the United experience where YOU live or come from? Do you live
abroad? How do you watch United? Is there a decent story to be told that would
interest our readers? If so and you can write your United watching experience
from afar, then get writing and send it (and any pics) to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2) Where's the strangest or oddest place you've ever watched a United game (on
tv or in person if you're an older Red who managed the trips to Iran or
Swaziland)?

Are you an ex-pat Red based in a far flung foreign land or a Red living in, or
from, an exotic location? Or someone who just ended up in the middle of nowhere
- or in the middle of everything - on your worldly travels in the past? What
lengths have you, or do you, have to go to, to see United from afar?

We'd like to hear from United fans who have watched United (in a bar, at a
ground or in other ways!) in out of the ordinary locations or from obtuse
destinations around the globe, who would be able to write a well written,
decent account of what it is/was like; how the locals were watching United,
what you got up to and any other detail (and pics would be a double bonus!)
that might be informative, revealing or just plain humourous to our readers
about United being watched all over the world.

[11] Chelsea set to 'only' lose £80m
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
from the SUN

'CHELSEA are today expected to announce a pre-tax loss for the year of
£80.2million.
That will represent a reduction of £60m on the previous 12 months and
billionaire owner Roman Abramovich wants the club to be breaking even by 2010.

The latest figures are for the year ending June 2006 and show just how
difficult it will be for chief executive Peter Kenyon to balance the books.

Up to June 2005, it is estimated Abramovich had invested £440m in the club,
which he bought two years earlier.

That figure must now have gone beyond the £500m mark judging by the trading
figures which will be released today.

The £80.2m loss is actually bigger than the turnover of most Premiership clubs.

But it is lower than the £87.8m lost during Abramovich’s first season and last
year’s staggering loss of £140m.'

[10] Scousers acting, well, like Scousers
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
from the SUN

'LIVERPOOL hothead Craig Bellamy attacked a team-mate with a golf club after a
row over a Robbie Williams song, it emerged last night.
Fiery Bellamy went for John Arne Riise when the Norwegian refused to join him
in a karaoke version of Angels.

The 27-year-old Welsh star had angered Riise by egging him to join in when
players took turns performing during a boozy night out in Portugal.

About 20 Liverpool players had been letting their hair down in Monty’s karaoke
bar in the resort of Vale Do Lobo.

The squad was on a five-day break to prepare for Wednesday’s clash with Spanish
giants Barcelona.

But back in Liverpool yesterday the players were seen joking together at the
club’s Melwood training ground.

Trouble began when Bellamy — who had sung an Elvis number earlier — badgered
Riise to get on the stage, where other players were lining up to sing Robbie’s
hit.

An insider at the resort on the Algarve said: “Riise clearly did not want to
get up and sing and was getting a bit of stick from his mates.

“They wouldn’t let it go, especially Bellamy. After a few minutes Riise snapped
back at them and that is when the mood changed.

“Up until then it had been good-natured but Bellamy reacted and the pair
squared up to each other.

“At the same time a glass smashed and all hell broke loose. There were a few
players trying desperately to calm it down — a few looked like they’d had one
too many.”

Riise, 25, who is said to have been sober, left the bar about midnight and went
to his room at the £113-a-night Barrington’s Health Spa.

The others stayed in the bar until boss Rafa Benitez, who had been having a
meal elsewhere, came to collect them.

Back at the spa, Bellamy is alleged to have picked up a golf club and barged
into Riise’s room, flailing out with it as he lay in bed.

Yesterday it was reported in Norway that Riise suffered bruising in the
incident and his mother Berit confirmed he had been attacked.

A source in Norway said: “By all accounts he was pretty scared.”

Staff at Monty’s told how the players had been enjoying themselves before the
row — and a separate flare-up with regular drinkers which led to police being
called.

Captain Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler had belted out Frank Sinatra’s My Way.

Beanpole striker Peter Crouch got the biggest cheer of the night for performing
his famous robotic dance while singing along to MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This.

And Brazilian player Fabio Aurelio had even sung a song from his homeland.

A waiter said: “They were having a great time, though to be honest none of them
were particularly great singers.”

Bellamy will travel to Spain with the rest of the squad for the Champions
League showdown. But furious Benitez has given his entire first team squad a
dressing down.'

[4] Indy on new Mihir Bose book
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 19, 2007 by ed:
'The prolonged takeover of Manchester United by US sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer
in 2005 came within 15 minutes of collapsing.

The claim is contained in a new book by Mihir Bose, the sports editor at the
BBC. In his work, entitled Manchester Disunited, Mr Bose claims that investment
bank NM Rothschild stepped in at the last minute to provide part of the
financing for the £800m deal when money from one of the Glazer family's hedge
fund backers in New York failed to be transferred in time to buy the shares in
Man Utd held by Irish duo JP McManus and John Garnier.

The pair's 28.9 per cent stake was held in Crest, a paperless trading system.
In order to buy the duo's holding in Man Utd on 12 May - the day of the planned
takeover - the Glazers had to pay the money into the Crest system by 2pm. But
at 1.45pm, the funds had still not arrived.

In a chapter called "How Rothschild rescued the Glazers' dream", Mr Bose quotes
Majid Ishaq, a banker at Rothschilds, as saying: "We didn't have all the money
through from the hedge funds. They were wiring instructions from New York and
one of them got a digit wrong ... We were worried what the Irish might think.
The Irish may have wondered if the Glazers had the money or not. Who knows if
the board would then go to the Irish and get them to reverse their decision to
sell. We were very worried."

According to Mr Bose, Mr Ishaq and fellow Rothschild banker Robert Leitao
pledged their bank's own funds to Crest to make up the shortfall without first
securing the sum - believed to be close to £100m - from Rothschild's financial
arm. The cash from the US hedge fund did not arrive until 2.30pm - too late to
buy out the Irish duo's stake.

By the end of the day, the Glazers held 68 per cent of Man Utd's shares,
ensuring they would have no trouble reaching the 75 per cent level needed to
complete the takeover.

The Glazers' attempts to buy Man Utd infuriated fans, who campaigned
vociferously for the Man Utd board to oppose the takeover attempt.

Mr Bose's book also reveals that had the board shown the "courage to brand
Glazer a hostile bidder", his financial backers for the deal, led by JP Morgan,
would have walked away.'

[17] Summer clear out on the cards?
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 18, 2007 by tb:
>From the Sunday People:

SIR Alex Ferguson is planning a summer clearout - even if his team win the
Premiership.

The Manchester United boss will trim his squad, which has expanded to over
SIXTY professionals.

And as he looks to bring in Owen Hargreaves and a couple more new faces, Fergie
knows that he needs to get rid of some of his fringe players.

Topping the roster will be England star Kieron Richardson and - internationals
John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher.

As well as Hargreaves, Fergie is also keen on Blackburn's David Bentley.

[15] We're the famous Man Utd and we're going.....
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, February 18, 2007 by tb:
Back to Cardiff (hopefully!)

>From the NOTW:

GOVERNMENT officials insist Wembley Stadium will NOT be ready for this year's
FA Cup Final.

The bombshell will cause severe embarrassment for the FA - who stand to lose
millions of pounds as well as becoming a laughing stock.

According to highly-placed government officials, the FA will not have enough
time to carry out full safety checks on the crisis-hit £800 million stadium
before the May 19 FA Cup final date.

A Whitehall source confirmed: "Wembley will not be ready for the FA Cup final
this year.

"Alternative arrangements are having to be made. The building work will be
finished, but the critical issue is the safety certificates.

"The FA are going to have to announce it in the next couple of weeks. That will
mean the Cup Final will be played in Cardiff again."

Significantly, no other events have been scheduled for the Millennium Stadium
on May 19 - and the Football League has kept open an option to stage their
play-off finals there - all scheduled for AFTER Cup Final day.

FA executives still insist they can get the safety checks done on time - but
only if the stadium is handed over by builders Multiplex on deadline.

Although construction work is expected to be finished, a series of legal
disputes means it will not have a safety licence in time. The stadium must
stage two ‘ramp-up' events - a women's international and an Under-21s
game-before getting a licence.

A senior source at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said: "We have
been contacted about this problem."

The FA is still in negotiations with Australian firm Multiplex and has not yet
taken control of the stadium.

But an FA spokesman claimed he was still confident the stadium would be ready
on time.

He said: "We are on track for hosting the FA Cup Final. Once we have hand-over
from Multiplex we will then stage two ramp-up events.

"Once that sequence of events has occurred we will then be in a position to
confirm the Cup Final."

However, we understand the FA has already held emergency talks about how to
handle the crisis because they are so worried about the backlash.

The stadium was initially supposed to be built in time for the 2003 Cup Final.

Multiplex signed the deal to build the new stadium in 2000 for a maximum price
of £326 million. The cost has now more than doubled.

In 2004 builders went on strike after 200 men were sacked in a dispute over
working hours.

There were further delays a year ago after the firm said it used the wrong type
of concrete for the foundations.

The stadium also had to return hundreds of urinals because the maker's name was
on them - in breach of strict advertising rules.

"I am very bullish about the present team. When you are rebuilding, there are
two things you need; courage and patience. We have shown both of them.

"They cannot be regarded as good as the 1999 team until they win the same
things.

"We all know what that team was capable of because they had been together for
so long. We are still waiting for this team to win something. That is the name

"What I hope is Wayne takes the form he has shown for us recently into the
Lille game because he has been right back to his very best.

"Don't get me wrong sometimes you have good games in friendlies, but other
times you won't get a great crowd and the opposition is not always the best.

"The other thing to remember is a lot of players pull out.

Wayne Bridge pulled out as soon as he arrived last week yet he was fit enough
to play [for Chelsea] last Saturday.

"You're never going to get your best team together for a friendly and I think

[19] Coppell on Fergie
---------------------------------
Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed:
“As long as his brain is active, he’ll probably still be staggering out of the
dugout in 2020 . . . Many people work well into their 80s these days with a
lively mind and as active as ever”. And why not? The age thing is an insult. As
long as he has his desire, he is no age. Whatever age he is, it doesn’t matter
because he ain’t playing. Just go to the United training ground any morning you
like. You’ll be second in. The man is unique. The thing that always amazes me
about Fergie is that United have won all their home games bar two this season.
To a certain extent, he must think ‘I wonder how many we’re going to win by
today?’ And yet look at his delight when United score — it’s almost as if it’s
the first goal of the season. To have that sort of excitement and drive after
everything he’s won is remarkable.”

[18] More Fergie

Posted Saturday, February 17, 2007 by ed:
“Clubs have to start paying more attention to home-based players. There needs
to be a rule where clubs have to play four or five home-based players. If you
go to buy an English player, prices are horrendous. That forces you abroad. It
is our own fault.”
