"The young players making their debuts, Dong and Kieran Lee, acquitted
themselves well. I thought Kieran Lee did fantastically well. He's not a
well-built lad and he really depends on his reading of the game. But he's an
excellent reader of the game and an excellent footballer. Chris Eagles was one
of our best players tonight. He provided a great deal of variety in his match,
his work-rate was terrific. I think Chris has shown he's got the temperament to
play. He does work very hard at his game. He's one of the lads who goes out and
practises in the afternoons. You get the rewards of that, and there are great
dividends."

[47] Gill on Malaysia as 2nd home and tour trouble

Premier League champions Manchester United are "extremely sad and disappointed"
at being snubbed by Malaysia, chief executive David Gill has told the country's
top tourism official.

Their July 27 match in that country was cancelled after pressure from the Asian
Football Confederation (AFC) amid fears it would detract from the Asian Cup
finals, which are co-hosted by Malaysia from July 7-29.

In a letter to Tourism Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Gill said it was a
blow for a team that regarded Malaysia as a "second home."

"We are extremely sad and disappointed to hear that we are not welcome," he
said in excerpts of the letter published in the New Straits Times on Thursday.

"Malaysia is our second home. We played there in 1995, 1999 and 2001 -- more
than anywhere else in Asia.

"Being the Premier League champions ... we were very much looking forward to
celebrating with our fans (in Malaysia)," he said.

Supporters in the football-mad country have branded the AFC selfish for forcing
Malaysia to dump the game, scheduled two days before the flagship tournament's
final in Jakarta.

United were due to visit as part of the country's 50th anniversary of
independence from Britain, despite Malaysian football bosses last year signing
an agreement not to promote other matches during the Asian Cup.

Gill argued that Manchester United would be a strong draw for visitors to
Malaysia, and underlined the club's support amid a major tourism drive this
year.

"Manchester United will bring many fans who will not only experience Malaysia's
beauty but whatever else it has to offer football fans," said Gill.

"When we were asked to participate in the Visit Malaysia Year and independence
celebrations, we were honoured to come and do what we owe our fans who have
been supporting the club."

The Red Devils plan to kick off their tour against J-League champions Urawa Red
Diamonds on July 17 in Japan before travelling to the South Korean capital for
a showdown with FC Seoul on July 20.

Alex Ferguson's team will then head to Macau for a match against Shenzhen on
July 23, although AFC president Mohammed bin Hammam has demanded that the
entire tour be scrapped, calling the club "disrespectful."

The tour's promoter, ProEvents, told AFP negotiations were continuing behind
the scenes to salvage the Kuala Lumpur match.

"There's a lot of confusion right now and it's not good for the fans,"
ProEvents Malaysia chief executive Julian Kam said.

"We are still negotiating with the Football Association of Malaysia to try and
find a solution. There will be an announcement soon."

Kam added that the games in Macau, South Korea and Japan were "pretty much
safe" as far as he was concerned, although Urawa said they were worried at the
speculation.

"There is speculation that Manchester United may cancel their entire tour, but
we have not received anything concrete on this matter," a spokesman for the
club told AFP.

"I believe it's a Malaysian matter and it may not necessarily affect the entire
schedule. Anyway, we are now trying to get information related to the issue."

"It was great for Chelsea to do that for u. We did it for them [when they were
champions in 2005]. It shows great respect between the two teams. It was a
difficult game for us. Both sides didn't play their strongest teams, but we
have come out with a respectable draw. It was [a strange game]. There was a
few lads in from the reserves and some players played out of position. We've
not played together all season, so to come to Chelsea we had to play well. I
thought we relly stuck together. Chelsea put a lot of pressure on us towards
the end of the game. It looked like they might nick a goal at the end, but we
managed to hold on and kept on defending."

"I've been waiting for this since I became a professional at 17. To make my
full 90-minute debut at Stamford Bridge and play well was unbelievable. The
lads have been brilliant. Sometimes it can be hard for a young player coming
into a senior team, particularly in these circumstances when they've got an FA
Cup final coming up. But they've been brilliant – the whole day's been
brilliant – and I never wanted it to end. You learn stuff off people like
Scholesy, Giggsy, Ronaldo and Rooney every day in training. And you learn from
playing against the likes of Joe Cole and John Terry. The whole day's been
special. I've always looked up to Cole, ever since I was a youngster. We both
used to play for London Schools. I was nine when he was 15 or 16 and I used to
watch him. He was a good player then. I've always admired him so when he came
on it was another proud moment for me because he's always been one of my idols.
We swapped shirts at the end and he will save mine, like I'll save his".

earlier, I think I would have been more nervous and it could have affected me.
Being picked for a match like this spurs you on and makes you play even better
than you'd expect. The experienced defenders helped me on the pitch, telling me
what to do and what positions to take up. It was good to play with them. It was
hard work, though. I was tired in the last half-hour but the lads dug in and
got a good result. To play against Chelsea in the Premiership is a dream debut.
It's different to what I'm used to at reserve level. It's good to play against
them; it can help you become a better player."

take a couple of interesting lessons after the game. The system that Chelsea
usually play and the way we controlled those movements, together with the
organisation and attitude of our players. Everything counts at the end. We
showed a great attitude and great confidence. The players came here to show and
explain why we're champions this season. We proved after 90 minutes that even
with some players who are not regularly in the team, we competed from the first
minute until the last."

club has to win all its games. It was very competitive. In the first half, I

[37] Guardian match report
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
Everyone enraged by the ticket allocation system for the FA Cup final would
have been appeased when they watched Chelsea and Manchester United being so
energetically inept. The visitors, having won the Premiership title with such
elan, saw no reason to show that quality here. Their line-up was even weaker
than Chelsea's and that alone nurtures the hope that there will be a very
different encounter at Wembley on May 19.

The selections will be upgraded and, with luck, so too will the calibre of the
play. When a rousing passage did come here it was because the ball ricocheted
around the visitors' penalty area following fumbles by the goalkeeper Tomasz
Kuszczak. He had, all the same, made convincing saves from Lassana Diarra and
Salomon Kalou.

In the end the lingering significance was of an unhappy sort. Scott Sinclair
had made his first start for Chelsea and did enough to remind spectators of his
virtuoso goal against Barnet while he was on loan at Plymouth. A tackle by Wes
Brown, however, broke a metatarsal and the youngster has a summer of
convalescence and rehabilitation ahead of him.

There ought not to have been real hurt in a fixture with no prize at stake.
Jose Mourinho's spat with the referee, Graham Poll, over the award of a foul
against Claude Makelele did add an authentic feel to the night for a moment or
two but the truth had never really been concealed. These clubs were determined
to keep something in reserve.

With so many youths and fringe players around the game was designed to have as
little relation as possible to the FA Cup final. Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson
must be satisfied that their intentions for Wembley have been concealed but no
one else went home pleased. Only Brown, Gabriel Heinze and Alan Smith remained
from the United starting XI that had chalked up what proved to be a
title-winning victory over Manchester City last Saturday. Ferguson had even
given a debut to the sturdy Chinese striker Dong Fangzhuo. In addition, Kieran
Lee had his first Premiership appearance at right-back.

For the visiting supporters the game was just a part of their purpose in being
at Stamford Bridge and not necessarily the most important element. They had
come to crow, as is the entitlement of fans looking down on the club who had
yielded the title. Mourinho was taunted with a chant of "You're not special any
more". It has been quite a while since anyone felt confident about saying that
to the Chelsea manager.

His squad had to applaud their Premiership conquerors on to the field. The
plan, of course, must have been to follow that by embarrassing United in the
game itself but that was not accomplished. In other countries the evening would
have been given over to a vapid, technical contest. In England it comes more
naturally to wrangle and save technique for another time.

The introduction of Joe Cole at the interval could have been intended to lift
the quality but the next notable incident was Brown's caution for the crude
tackle on Sinclair and Diarra, fouling Eagles, was cautioned for Chelsea
shortly afterwards. There was a monotonous recklessness and it was not long
before Eagles himself saw a yellow card for a challenge, with studs raised, on
Wright-Phillips.

"That's why you're champions," the Stamford Bridge support bayed. The truth
about United's means of lifting the title is the exact opposite of that but
this encounter stifled the best in each side.

went and the players ran over to me I had the same feeling as a striker who has
just scored the winning goal. It's a wonderful feeling."

"The only way it could have been better would be if we had actually won it
during the course of the match and the trophy presented to us at the end of the
game. Instead, the winners were decided when Arsenal played Chelsea the day
after we had beaten Manchester City. But we'll take it however it comes. We
want more silverware before the season's out and we've got the FA Cup final to
look forward to next week. We haven't had much time to dwell on the [Champions
League] defeat in Milan last week, which was disappointing, of course. But
winning the Premiership for Manchester United for the first time in four years
eases that disappointment somewhat."

[18] Premier League to make rule change?
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
from sportinglife

'The Premier League are to set to bring in new rules to avoid unwritten
agreements of the sort which led to Everton not picking goalkeeper Tim Howard
against his old club Manchester United last month.

Howard was not picked by Everton to play against his former club after "a
gentleman's agreement" and replacement Iain Turner was responsible for at least
one goal in the 4-2 defeat.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore is considering a new rule to
make it official that when players go on loan to another club and then sign a
permanent deal they cannot play against their original club for the rest of
that season.

Manchester United originally tried to insert a clause into the sale of Howard
preventing the United States international playing against them but were
blocked by the Premier League, who were furious but powerless when it was later
revealed Everton had made an unwritten agreement not to pick him.

Scudamore said: "We insisted the clubs culd not write the clause into a
contract and because there was no contractual position in force, if Everton had
wanted to play Howard they could have and were not in breach of our rules.

"We have a very restricted loan system in the Premier League, much more
restricted than in other leagues.

"We do have an odd situation that if a player goes on loan our rules say he
cannot play against his original club. The moment the move becomes permanent
the rules say you cannot stop them playing against their original club.

"Perhaps for situations where it has been a hybrid loan and permanent move,
there should be a clause which says he cannot play against his original club
for the rest of the season."

[15] Fergie on not losing

Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
"It was important for us not to get beaten because Chelsea have a very good
home record. Maybe when people saw our team they thought we were not
interested. We were interested okay. Manchester United has to try and win all
its games. I was pleased with our performance. Chelsea only started getting
chances in the final 15 minutes when our young players started to die, which
was understandable given the pace of the game. In that sense we retained our
honour but I also felt we should have had a penalty kick, which would have
ended Chelsea's unbeaten home record, so that is a pity."

[14] Sportinglife on pre-season
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
'The first three legs of Manchester United's summer tour of Asia are expected
to go ahead as planned despite continuing uncertainty over the concluding visit
to Malaysia.

United have become embroiled in a wrangle between the Asian Football
Confederation and the Malaysian government after accepting an invitation to
play in Kuala Lumpur on July 27.

The game - against a Malaysian XI - was supposed to mark the 50th anniversary
of Malaysia's independence as well as seal ties between the Red Devils and the
country chief executive David Gill regards as their 'second home'.

However, a major row has erupted over the date, which comes while the
four-yearly Asian Cup tournament is being held.

As one of four co-hosts, Malaysia are heavily involved in the tournament and
while their final game, a semi-final, is due to be held on July 25, FIFA
president Sepp Blatter has added his voice to the claims that United's presence
in the region will overshadow the event.

Blatter's stance has not gone down well with local fans, who are desperate to
see United in action.

Tour organisers have not entirely given up hope a compromise can be found,
although with United unable to put their Malaysia trip back any further due to
their commitments in England, there is not much room for negotiation.

The possibility of the game being scrapped cannot be discounted but even if the
new Premiership champions are forced to skip the final leg of their trip, PA
Sport understands they will still head to Japan, South Korea and Macau as
originally planned before flying home slightly earlier than scheduled.'

cannot be putting a team on the pitch that disrespects those teams. We also
have our own reputation to think about, so although I am a great friend of Alan
Curbishley, he understands the position I am in and knows I will be playing my
strongest team on Sunday."

[10] It's all kicking off over the pre-season
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
from Reuters

'Japan's football chief Saburo Kawabuchi has called criticism of Manchester
United's July tour of Asia "unbalanced," Japanese media reported on Thursday.
Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed Bin Hammam has accused
United of being disrespectful by organising a pre-season tour which clashed
with the Asian Cup.
However, Kawabuchi said the AFC over-reacted by calling on the English
champions to change the tour dates, according to Japan's Nikkan Sports daily.
"I think breaking contracts would be more of a problem," Kawabuchi said,
referring to United's four matches across the region from July 17 to 27.
"The AFC's stance is too unbalanced. Are Japanese clubs not allowed to play
against the top clubs in the world?"
United kick off their pre-season tour against J-League champions Urawa Reds in
Saitama on July 17 before travelling to South Korea to play FC Seoul on July 20.
They play China's Shenzhen FC in Macau on July 23 and were planning to finish
with a match against a Malaysian select team in Kuala Lumpur on July 27.
The Asian Cup runs from July 7 to 29 and is being hosted by Malaysia, Thailand,
Indonesia and Vietnam.
United's only game in any of the host countries is the one on July 27 but the
Football Association of Malaysia has pointed out that its Asian Cup
responsibilities end on July 25.
Japan have won the last two Asian Cups, in Lebanon in 2000 and in China in 2004
when they defeated the hosts 3-1 in the final.'

[9] BBC on Chelsea Cup Final team news
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
'Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has ruled midfielder Michael Ballack and defender
Ricardo Carvalho out of the FA Cup final against Manchester United. Ballack has
undergone surgery on his ankle - but is back in training.

Portuguese defender Carvalho damaged the medial ligaments of his right knee
against Bolton earlier this month.

Asked about the chances of making the final on 19 May at Wembley, Mourinho
said: "Michael Ballack has 0% chance of playing. Ricardo has 1% chance."

Mourinho also played down suggestions that he had a problem with Ballack after
he underwent surgery on his ankle in Germany - reportedly against the club's
wishes.

"Michael is injured. My relationship with injured players is nothing special.
It is true. Injured players are for the medical department," he said.

"I am the manager and I have to coach fit players - players who are ready to
play.

"I remember about injured players and I have them in my mind, because I miss
them.

"But my relationship with injured players is not a special one. I have to
concentrate on the players ready to play."

Chelsea's injury problems encompass striker Didier Drogba, who is struggling
with an ankle injury, while Scott Sinclair has broken his foot.

"If you want to talk about injuries, let's talk about Scott," said Mourinho.

"He is a kid playing his first full game for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and in
a couple of days he will have surgery on his metatarsal. That is a sad thing."

Sinclair, who made his first start for Chelsea against United in the
Premiership on Wednesday, will require surgery after breaking the bone in a
challenge with Wes Brown.'

"With Mr Poll and Chelsea there are so many incidents. We don't like to have Mr
Poll. We have to accept decisions, but if you ask me if I jump with happiness
when I know Mr Poll is our referee? No. I was telling Mr Poll a couple of
things I have had in my heart since the Tottenham game at White Hart Lane. But
it was nothing special. I was cleansing my soul," said Mourinho. I thought I
was being sent off but I wasn't. I walked to the stands but then my assistants
were saying 'you can stay in your position.' I think he (Poll) was what he is
always. He had a normal performance when he is refereeing a Chelsea match."

[6] Important news for the news on here next week
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
As our final RN of the season (136) is out for the West Ham game ONLY and ONLY
available for one league game (instead of the usual 2, 3 or 4), we obviously
need to make sure we sell above average during one day to make up for the lost
readership we will get for not having the extra selling days.

Though we know you love the website - and news - it is the mag which is the
backbone for the whole RN 'foundation' and unless people support the mag, it
can't support the running of the site and as such, without the mag there is no
site... So for the news for Monday May 14th through to Friday May 18th, you
will ONLY be able to get the news for that day, as it happens and throughout
that day, via the VIP forum - where you will gain access FOR FREE either by
buying a mag either at the West Ham game or in advance by mail order here.

The news will then be contained in our VIP forum for each day - and you can
gain access (subscribers are in there for a year for free) if you are not
already by being put in there if you order the mag here in advance - or by
giving us the password next week after you buy it at the West Ham game which
will relate to a question from the mag (which we'll let you know what to do as
of next Monday). Buy or pre-order the mag and entry to the VIP area is FREE.

For those who are never going to buy the mag, and always 'just lurk' you will
be given Mondays news here as usual...but on the Tuesday, and so on and so on
until the Saturday - which will be the Friday news! We realise some will go
elsewhere but it's an important/vital way of helping us, and giving us
something back...in return for you getting what we think is a great read in the
bargain (the mag) and of course breaking news as it happens. The most extensive
United news on the web? We think so!

You can order mag 136 here, and if you're not already a member of the forum
just visit http://www.rnforum.co.uk/forum/index.php
http://www.rnforum.co.uk/forum/index.php and register and we'll do the rest and
then you are ready to enter the VIP forum next week.

pride. Maybe when people saw the team they were expecting we wouldn't be
bothered or that Chelsea were going to roll us over, but that wasn't the case.
I have to be happy with a draw and some of our performances. We were good in
terms of possession and confidence to play, although we tired markedly in the
last 15 minutes and had to hang on a bit."

[1] Indy on Eto'o interest
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007 by ed:
'Manchester United have inquired about the availability of Barcelona's Samuel
Eto'o - but have been put off by the £40m transfer fee they were quoted.
The approach was made last month by United's chief executive David Gill and
although the newly crowned Premiership champions have not given up hope of
landing the Cameroonian striker, they have made clear they will not pay what
Barcelona want.
Any deal would be fraught with difficulties not least because Eto'o is unsure
whether he really wants to leave Barça and come to the Premiership. An added
complication is that the 26-year-old is understood to have recently sacked his
long-standing lawyer, Jose Maria Mesalles, who also acts as his agent, and is
himself conducting negotiations over his future.
Eto'o is also a headstrong character who can quickly change his mind. Last
February he fell out with Barça coach Frank Rijkaard - and with Ronaldinho -
after he was accused of not wanting to play. It was assumed that the latter two
would leave the Nou Camp before him but Eto'o made clear he wanted to go. A
problem for Barça is that they don't want to lose both him and Ronaldinho - who
has been attracting interest from Milan and is expected to leave Spain after a
disappointing season.
However, Milan are also interested in Eto'o with sources claiming they would
prefer to sign the three-time African Player of the Year if he was available.
Again, however, they would not want to pay the price Barça are currently
demanding even if, as the Catalan club have pointed out in negotiations, they
are already asking for much less than the £75m buy-out clause in his contract.
However, Barça are also aware that with just two years left on that contract,
and no sign that Eto'o wants to agree a new deal - although that can change
from day to day - they are in danger of losing a lot of money if he stays.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made an imposing striker a priority in the
transfer market. The club has explored the possibility of signing Dimitar
Berbatov from Tottenham, and they are also eager to take advantage of the
clause in Michael Owen's contract that means he can leave Newcastle United for
just £9m - far less than the £16m it cost to take him to St James' Park two
years ago.
Ferguson has been interested in Eto'o for some time and it would be a real coup
if he could land the player especially as he was, last summer, Chelsea's main
transfer target before they decided to sign Andrei Shevchenko. Eto'o has also
interested Arsenal, who are desperate to acquire a leading striker, although
manager Arsène Wenger is aware that he may not have the funds to compete.
Eto'o has missed four months of what has been a topsy-turvy season for Barça,
although they still head La Liga, but has returned to score 10 goals in his
last 14 appearances to confirm his return to fitness. United have also made
clear that they are only interested in a cash deal and will not include
Cristiano Ronaldo in any move.'
