So the final verdict was to go with the script to append the tags to the head.
The transfer element idea did more or less work, but I wasn't able to figure out a good way to make it work with the image meta tag. It seems like transfer elements are really best used for text. There's probably some fancy way to take the path from my img_article image element and copy it into my tfr_imgArticle transfer element but it just seems easiest to juggle a few chainsaws..i mean use some jquery.
