Today's Focus: Progress on the 10-Gig standard
-------------------------------------------------------
By Jeff Caruso
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers continues to make
progress toward a standard on 10-Gigabit Ethernet.
Here are a few notes, gleaned from a recent conference:
* The schedule for reaching a final standard for 10-Gig Ethernet
is March 2002, but I have been told that might be slightly
optimistic.
* At this point, there are 17 proposals on the table for
implementing 10-Gig, but the group is hoping to narrow that down
to a handful this month.
* Just as Gigabit Ethernet borrowed from Fibre Channel
technology, so the next generation of Fibre Channel will borrow
technology from the 10-Gig standards work.
* The first draft of a 10-Gig standard is expected by September.
* Its unlikely there will be any products that perform
autonegotiation between, say, Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gig (so
nothing in the style of todays 10/100M bit/sec switch ports,
which can operate at either speed).
* Prestandard 10-Gig equipment should be due out later this year,
possibly by fall Interop.
* Looking further out, 100-Gigabit Ethernet (yes, Im serious)
could happen in four years, but 40-Gigabit could happen sooner.
